Kashmir Hands’ owner, Dina M. Giugliano, possesses an unending fascination with the abilities of the human body. She fosters her enchantment through three primary avenues: massage, yoga, and doula services, a Greek tradition that combines the duties of a pregnancy counselor with those of a midwife. Her thumbs relieve patrons’ tension and coax out toxins during therapeutic deep-tissue massage, a soothing avenue to injury recovery, particularly when paired with a gentle form of yoga. There are more gentle and more intense forms to choose from, as Giugliano offers 17 types of yoga classes, each developed for a certain age group, level of athletic ability, or species.
Inside the Douglaston School of Music and Art, certified yoga instructor, Daniela Crocchiola, uses her years of experience and extensive training to guide students through hot vinyasa yoga and ballet bar classes. Brought to her mother's yoga classes as a young cobra, Crocchiola learned the benefits of regular stretch sessions at an early age and credits the practice for helping her grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. While working in Manhattan in fashion and cosmetic marketing, Crocchiola studied a variety of yoga styles, such as Bikram, ashtanga, and kundalini, and obtained 200 hour yoga teaching certifications recognized by the Yoga Alliance and by loyal downward facing dogs everywhere. In addition to being a certified yoga instructor, Crocchiola's skills equip her to lead Pilates and ballet bar workouts.
Yoga Nanda schedules more than 40 classes a week in a variety of yoga styles, including Hatha flow, kids yoga, prenatal yoga, and Vinyasa flow. Classes are taught by highly knowledgeable and dedicated instructors, many of whom have studied yoga in India.
The Well Loft's skilled instructors sculpt flexible forms from stiff silhouettes with yoga, Pilates, women’s boxing, and fitness classes. Springboard Pilates incorporates wall-mounted springs into an invigorating workout to build core strength and prepare students for street skirmishes with ne’er-do-well jack-in-the-boxes. Mat-based Pilates sessions stretch and strengthen abs, hips, thighs, and glutes, and yoga classes borrow from multiple yoga modalities to create a satisfying flow of postures such as downward-facing dog, cobra pose, and cobra commander. Women’s Fit Boxing encourages the development of speed and agility with regular feedback and soft partner sparring. Fitness classes vary, often combining cardio and strength training to focus on specific body areas such as the difficult-to-tone larynx.
A sleek, modern entry area welcomes guests into Vitality Yoga's contemporary space. Atop the studio's dark, hardwood floors, seasoned yogis lead students of all skill levels through 70-minute classes in a variety of yoga styles designed to improve bodies' strength, flexibility, and posture. Most of the studio's sessions incorporate a combination of hatha and Vinyasa yoga, which focus on gentle stretching or athletic pose progressions. Revolution Yoga’s crew of yogis espouses the virtues of self-exploration through movement and meditation, a feat accomplished in 17 different types of yoga classes held seven days a week. Classes are held in full-sized classrooms or a space set aside exclusively for families and kids. Unlike many yogis, the teachers look beyond yoga and napping inside armoires to fully explore the scope of self, turning to community and arts to supplement their teachings.
Behind the studio stands Revolution Gallery, which has hosted paintings, mixed media design shows, films, literature, and musical performances. The staff also runs an artisan boutique, which is full of clothing, herbal supplements, and yoga gear—all manufactured from fair-trade products that provide jobs to unemployed trees and shrubs.
