Sports, Steaks & Spirits combines the television-studded walls of a sports bar with the hearty comfort food of a neighborhood pub. Menu items include baby back ribs and half-pound burgers, as well as more internationally inspired dishes, such as tempura-fried shrimp with coconut breading. Cooks can also top hand-stretched, thin-crust pizzas with a combination of 17 available toppings, including basil, sausage, and red onion.

Although its menu might distinguish Sports, Steaks & Spirits from other bars, guests are also welcome to just knock back a beer while watching Boston sports teams compete for control of the world’s supply of silver-plated trophies. Sixty plasma televisions line the bar’s walls, and all booths boast their own small screen, which may have prompted Patch to describe the spot as “a veritable North Reading sports haven.” Even the color scheme evokes the feel of well-trodden sports turf, surrounding visitors with yellow-green walls and pool tables lined with emerald-green felt.

Q&A with the Owner and Artist

What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?

[During our painting events], we offer a comedic approach to our easy, step-by-step painting instruction and keep the paint party alive by offering a great variety of upbeat music and professional artist instruction. We donate a portion of every ticket sale to a local charity.

Describe a time your services really changed a client's life for the better.

We have helped raise thousands of dollars by offering fundraising opportunities to our customers. We have traveled outside of our comfort zone to throw a paint-and-sip party for a customer battling cancer who could not travel far for one of our events. We have worked on numerous occasions with our clients to make their experience pleasurable and memorable.

What aspect of the services you offer most often surprises people?

[That] the artist was funny and not dry or humorless. Customers are surprised by how well their paintings came out, even if they never painted on canvas before. [They're also often surprised by] how much money they raised for their fundraiser.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

We are different from all paint-and-sip parties because we donate a portion of every ticket we sell to a local charity.

Any coach will tell you that teaching absolute beginners requires patience. As luck would have it, Marissa Theobald of Marissa's Bit O' Luck Stable has patience in spades. She needed it to complete her equine industries degree at the University of Massachusetts?Amherst, earn a license as a riding instructor and trainer, and work with problem horses, especially when they would ask, "Are we there yet?" from the trailer. Novice riders enjoy her calm, levelheaded approach as they learn the German method of riding, which emphasizes a balanced seat and developing a relationship with the horse?core tenets at any experience level. As riders advance, they can continue their education in dressage, jumping, and eventing under Marissa's tutelage, occasionally sneaking off to enjoy the miles of trails that abut the 9-acre ranch.

Hat Trick Training Center and Stop It Goaltending develops the next generation of hockey stars, teaching them the skills necessary to get hats thrown on the ice while they're on offense or to prevent that from happening while they're on defense or in goal. Throughout the year, the facility buzzes with activity as youngsters work on their skills during learn-to-skate programs, shooting clinics, goaltending lessons, and strength-and-conditioning sessions. The center even rents out its ice, allowing skaters to treat it as their very own backyard rink where they can play pick-up games or build a snowman best friend out of snow-shower remnants.
