Continuing the mission started in London more than 160 years ago, YMCA Smithfield provides quality, accessible fitness and wellness programs to families. Members enjoy full access to the center's fitness opportunities, whether they're burning calories in the gym, gliding through laps in the pool, or joining fellow members in classes ranging from kickboxing to Pilates. YMCA Smithfield also houses the organization's signature children's programming, helping kids get ready for school with pre-K enrichment or prepping them for a semester abroad in Atlantis with swim lessons. Before- and afterschool programs also give kids a safe spot to play while parents are at work.
When Kaleena Roch took her first yoga class shortly after having her second child, she was blown away by the physical, emotional, and spiritual benefits it brought her. After that experience, she decided to delve further into the world of yoga, eventually earning her teaching certification. Now, she shares her passion with her students during classes held inside the American Martial Arts facility. Her hatha flow classes consist of flowing poses that help students work on their flexibility, strength, and stamina.
The black-belt instructors at American Martial Arts welcome students of all ages to learn integrity and self-control along with a variety of self-defense disciplines. Children's programs help little ones as young as 3 burn off excess energy as they learn age-appropriate martial arts, and adults explore styles such as kenpo karate, muay thai, and thumb wrestling. Students of all skill levels can convene at yoga classes on select days to stretch bodies and center minds. The studio's red-floored practice space is outfitted with mirrored walls and punching bags, allowing students to keep an eye on form as they practice jabs, roundhouse kicks, and conflict-diffusing bear hugs.

After running a reiki and reflexology booth at a health expo, Joanne Salem decided to create a permanent wellness center. She officially opened the doors to Changing Lives in 2010, and since then she has helped to reduce numerous clients' aches and stress levels through advanced healing and relaxation techniques. Joanne has experience working with all manner of people, with past clients including a woman who previously wouldn't let anyone touch her feet and another woman whose plantar fasciitis was so severe that she felt like she "was walking on rocks."
Changing Lives also regularly hosts wellness-related events and seminars, led by Joanne or a life-sized cutout of Richard Simmons.
Throughout the past three decades martial artist Bob Salisbury has dabbled in an array of martial arts styles—shaolin kempo karate and taekwondo, to name a few—but his specialty is kosho ryu kempo. At his studio, RI Fitness & Martial Arts, he and his staff teach this and other martial arts styles to students of all ages. Their adult classes focus on improving self-defense techniques, whereas youth classes focus on boosting self-esteem. Meanwhile, cardio kickboxing, boot camp, and kettlebell training classes can also help students pack a stronger punch and or whittle their way into a size smaller black belt.
Though Tranquility Day Spa's menu of organic facials, nail treatments, and massages lives up to its name, its airy rooms, brightly colored walls, and printed textiles set an invigorating mood. Inside the hardwood-floored space, professionally trained aestheticians brighten faces with OHA organic skincare products, as well as photostimulate stagnant skin cells with the LED pulse of a Revitalight facial. In addition to skincare, they work to revitalize molting spirit animals with aromatherapy, raindrop therapy, reiki, massages, and body wraps, often with the aid of essential oils, Dead Sea mud, and herbs.
