Members at Curves, a fitness center designed exclusively for women, rotate around a circuit of hydraulic resistance machines that have been designed to work with female bodies and promote weight loss and better health. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage participants’ machine maneuvering and muscle making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing momentum, the hydraulic machines use your own body weight, fitness level, and aerodynamic water bottle to create resistance that matches abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.
After walking through the front door to Healing in Harmony Wellness Center, the delicate fragrance of essential oils is the first thing that welcomes a visitor in, followed by earth-tone walls and friendly healers. Each member of the team works with clients to help overcome their health problems through an array of services that touch on massage, facials, reiki healing, and other therapies. With a menu of massage modalities and cupping techniques, clients have many options to choose from, such as the Soul massage, which incorporates reiki into soothing strokes and carefully applied pressure. To ensure clients also feel better on the outside, the staff performs aesthetic services including facials and nail services.
Continuing the mission started in London more than 160 years ago, YMCA Smithfield provides quality, accessible fitness and wellness programs to families. Members enjoy full access to the center's fitness opportunities, whether they're burning calories in the gym, gliding through laps in the pool, or joining fellow members in classes ranging from kickboxing to Pilates. YMCA Smithfield also houses the organization's signature children's programming, helping kids get ready for school with pre-K enrichment or prepping them for a semester abroad in Atlantis with swim lessons. Before- and afterschool programs also give kids a safe spot to play while parents are at work.
Ocean State Rock Climbing's instructors guide climbers step-by-step as they progress from their first time on a wall until they tackle advanced problems. Initially, they put novices through a series of entry-level routes. As their climbers advance, they then teach them to belay and master more advanced skills such as lead climbing.
These journeys from beginner to master take place amid the towering walls of Ocean State Rock Climbing's gym. Secured by top ropes, rock climbers scale colorful routes and solve increasingly challenging problems. Crash pads create safe landings as visitors climb across bouldering routes or practice being trolls within two bouldering caves.
At the gym, LLC, a sparklingly clean center invites members to build muscle and lean, powerful physiques through classes ranging from Pilates, circuit training, to kick-and-core workouts. While parents burn calories in power yoga and spin classes, kids can play and learn under careful supervision at the Lil' Gymies play center.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, immigrants flocked to Rhode Island in search of work and prosperity within the state's mill towns. Their labors?both on and off the factory floor?helped define the culture of the Blackstone Valley. Today, the Museum of Work and Culture preserves their stories for future generations.
