As a fitness discipline, Pilates takes on many different forms. Though the fundamentals remain the same, exercisers can explore many styles to find an effective personal workout. Apparatus sessions employ pieces of equipment such as the tower and the reformer designed by the creator of Pilates to increase resistance and enhance the regimen's effectiveness. Barre classes supplement the Pilates's core-sculpting basics with balletic exercises designed to create long, lean muscle and a sudden affinity for Swan Lake, while suspension training adds in the extra challenge of resisting gravity while hanging from ceiling-mounted TRX harnesses.
The expert trainers at Comprehensive Body Conditioning Studio draw on many methods to get their clients in shape. They combine tae kwon do and exercise science, yoga and body weight exercises, interval training, and mind relaxation techniques. The trainers understand that every person is different and no one routine can target the nuanced needs of each person, so they create their own routines catered to the strengths and weaknesses of the individual trainees.
At the age of 13, when most kids are writing The Karate Kid fan fiction, David Martucci was beginning his martial-arts training. He eventually transferred his punching prowess into a coaching career that has yielded title-winning students in tournaments such as NAGA and Grapplers Quest. As the head coach of the American Top Team training centers, he's overseen a team of professional fighting trainers that has produced more than 67 pro fighters competing in the UFC and WEC.
Inside the gym's 5,000-square-foot training space, trainers share their sage grappling advice and recipes for coffeecake, molding future champions disciplined in muay thai, MMA, and boxing. Students learn high-level takedowns in the martial-arts room where heavy bags hover over a floor padded in Zebra mats, or how to negotiate the grueling confines of a 22-foot competition cage. Just beyond the training room, people work on writing checks that their fists can cash in the workout facility stockpiled with dumbbells, weight benches, machines, and cardio equipment.
Amid its fully equipped studio of Peak Pilates equipment, Body Reformers sculpts muscles throughout the body while improving posture, mental awareness, and overall well-being. Feeble backs and sheepish hips benefit from the Pilates methodology, which focuses on strengthening muscles without manually pumping ounces of iron or hoisting mule after mule above one's head. During the one-hour mat classes, fully certified Pilates instructors guide classes of 12 students through exercises that flatten abdominals, tighten thighs, lift buttocks, and sharpen dull shoulder blades. The private reformer lesson further refines forms with one-on-one instruction.
