The life of a contractor can already take its toll on a back, but Stacey Reeves was a mountain biker, too. After a biking accident in which he injured his neck, Stacey turned to yoga as a way to exercise while hopefully easing his chronic pain. Suffice it to say he quickly became enamoured with it.
Still, Stacey frequently found himself the only man in any of his classes, despite its overwhelmingly positive effects on his physical and mental well-being. So he decided to found his own studio instead, soon registering as a certified instructor and creating a space where men could explore the form in a male-focused environment. Today, YoGuys holds weekly classes at each of the two spacious locations. Owing to his casual discovery of yoga, he takes a casual approach to classes, fostering a relaxed, organic atmosphere as he helps students tone their muscles through flowing movements, or yang, and tighten their joints in static poses, or yin, which together enable yogis to work multiple areas of their body at once without having to arm-wrestle an octopus.
Though the certified staff at Live Fit takes health seriously, they have fun while they achieve it. Ten indoor cycles set the scene for intense indoor biking workouts, and in a nearby wood-floored studio, instructors lead high-energy Zumba sessions and TRX-suspension workouts. The staff’s infectious enthusiasm inspires exercisers to push through personal-training and small-group sessions, which are sometimes held on the nearby pier to inspire exercisers with vistas of the city and squads of whales cheering silently just beneath the surface. The studio’s view of the city is equally as pristine on days when the weather doesn’t agree with outdoor workouts, as noted by the North Shore Outlook.
Already with 12 locations and growing, Oxygen Yoga & Fitness is a new way to do hot yoga that's gaining popularity rapidly. Classes at this yoga studio are completed in infrared-heated rooms, helping to increase flexibility, detox the immune system, and reduce the appearance of cellulite. As clients complete a full body yoga workout that incorporates elements of Pilates, they sweat out toxins, help release tight muscles, and finally discover what toes feel like. Certified instructors lead the way, offering modifications and individual attention, and students practice in a spacious, welcoming environment. Oxygen Yoga & Fitness also offers kids' yoga and bootcamp.
At CrossFit Lions, typical workout equipment such as treadmills and cardio machines make way for pull-up bars, medicine balls, bumper plates, squat racks, and tires.. Each day, certified trainers design a new Workout of the Day (WOD), which may have athletes sweating through exercises such as running, rowing, weight lifting, kettlebell training, performing body-weight exercises, or completing gymnastics-inspired moves such as dips on suspended rings. CrossFit workouts are designed to be broad and inclusive, and can be scaled to match any fitness level from novice to elite athlete.
At Om Prem Yoga Studio, tall windows draw in light to help create an inviting space where fitness and stress-relief mingle. Inside, experienced yoga teachers lead students through group, semiprivate, and one-on-one sessions, which range from gentle hatha and Pilates to Vinyasa-flow classes. Additionally, the studio hosts yoga-teacher training and workshops were students can focus on specific elements of their practice, such as standing postures, backbends, wall-rope supportive poses, and meditation.
