Each member of Bikram Yoga Canada’s talented team of instructors possesses a sage yogic know-how borne of their participation in a 10-week certification course taught by Bikram Choudhury in California. Over the course of this rigorous program, the posing pedagogues learned the essentials of heated movement modality, spending hours stuffing their brains with wisdom ranging from yoga philosophy and anatomy to a detailed study of each pose. While the world-renowned course provides the team with an unshakable foundation, the instructors—firm believers that learning is a never-ending endeavour—undergo re-certification every three years to ensure that they remain abreast of current practices. With this impeccably trained and passionate staff at the helm of every sweat-inducing class, Bikram Yoga Canada offers students of all experience levels a chance to experience the physical detoxification afforded by stretching sessions within their balmy studio. During each class, the instructors put their hard-earned teaching skills into practice as they lead pupils through a series of 26 postures, known as asanas, designed to warm and stretch muscles, ligaments, and tendons while melting away tension and the frozen dinners stored in the hearts of pupils.
At Wynn Fitness Clubs, exercise isn’t about altering how the body looks. It’s about changing clients for the better from the inside out. Here, during group and one-on-one training, fitness experts pair encouraging words with adaptable exercises involving dumbbells, kettlebells, Selectorized weight machines, and functional movements such as pushing and balancing. In addition to bolstering the body, these programs strengthen the will to achieve, propelling exercisers toward goals faster than an espresso-fuelled hockey puck. Calming fitness classes such as yoga and Pilates unite the mind and body with deep stretches, focused core exercises, and measured-breathing techniques. Club members can torch calories with solo sessions on the clubs’ cardio machines or during boot camps, cycling routines, and Zumba dance parties that cultivate friendships while boosting energy and endurance. Post-workout, spa-like locker rooms and couch-lined cafés invite exercisers to relax and recharge.
Real Tan’s owners originally opened their doors more than 20 years ago with a salon in Scarborough. The single location couldn't keep up with tanning demands, leading to a relocation to Mississauga and a recently opened second location in Thornhill. Along the way, Real Tan has expanded its specialties to include ultra-bronzing Ergoline beds, Playboy spray tanning, and teeth whitening, which brightens teeth up to eight shades and lasts longer than gargling white-out.
Sustainable lifestyle choices, environmental consciousness, and building a sense of community: these are a few of the pillars upon which Moksha Yoga is built. The architect is Ted Grand, who drew from 12 years of training under yoga masters including Bikram Choudhury and Acharya Yoganand to develop his own special technique. Moksha's focus on clearing the mind of distractions, detoxifying the body through sweat, and building powerful core musculature can help practitioners overcome everyday obstacles from managing arthritis or stress to sliding out of tight crawlspaces.
Moksha Yoga’s 75 studios operate under the caring supervision of a professional teaching staff. Their diverse backgrounds not only include years of yoga study, but also apprenticeships under Nobel Peace Prize winners and careers with Amnesty International. Both instructors and students are encouraged to share their positive philosophy off the mat as well: the company supports several charitable endeavours, and its studios are powered by renewable energy sources.
Derwin Johnson has donned many belts. After serving in the Canadian Armed Forces, he began studying a variety of martial arts, including muay thai, Shaolin kempo, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. He eventually realized that he wanted to share his extensive physical knowledge with others, and left behind the corporate world of glass-encased offices for a realm of punching bags and floor mats. Today, Johnson operates The Sweat Shack, where he combines his love of martial arts with modern fitness techniques to help transform clients’ bodies.
Johnson and his skilled instructors practice a fitness style called muscle confusion, constantly varying their exercise routines so that the body can’t adapt to the workout. This method prompts the muscles to constantly work harder and burn more calories. The team holds classes in seven partner martial-arts gyms, taking advantage of their bags, mats, and pads to add high-intensity, light-contact accessories to each camp.
