Inside one of Illinois’ oldest PADI–certified dive centers, Berry Dive Center’s eight instructors call upon a combined 100 years of experience to increase the underwater expertise of small student cohorts. Lessons unfold in both pool and classroom, with instructors sharing textbook techniques and safety tips before offering personalized critiques during supervised practice dives. The PADI five-star IDC facility keeps skills sharp with PADI certification courses and weekend excursions to Kankakee’s Haigh Quarry, with adventure-diving opportunities such as exploring wrecks, deep-water diving, and apprehending goldfish smugglers. The center’s dive shop also stocks a full line of diving equipment and manuals.
"Our brain is designed to realize what we wish, without any minor errors," says Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee. "If you want success, it will create success. If you want happiness or health, it will create them. Anything is possible, as long as negative thoughts and emotions don't interfere."
To make this challenging, yet hopeful, philosophy accessible to all, Lee combined the Eastern concept of chi energy with his own brain-management system, developing a distinctive program that unlocks inner peace and sweeps up brain clutter caused by the daily stress of always having to find Waldo. This focus, shared by Body & Brain Holistic Yoga and The Life Yoga, forms the basis of the studio's classes and consultations. Warm-up yoga maneuvers awaken muscles before 30–40 minutes of breathing, stretching, core practice, and meditation—including a signature brain-wave vibration technique that aims to calibrate mental and physical energies. Cooldown exercises ease the body back into quotidian functionality before a 10-minute teatime invites socialization among participants while bolstering pinkie endurance.
Title Boxing Club began as a cocktail of talents: the fighting prowess of former professional boxer Danny Campbell, the acumen of businessman Tom Lyons, and top-of-the-line gear from Title Boxing, LLC owners David Hanson and Tony Carbajo. Hanson and Carbajo provided the gym’s equipment and outfitted the first location with an onsite pro shop. Campbell put together two signature Power Hour workouts, one based on boxing and the other on kickboxing. Lyons took care of the franchising, and the club has spread all over the nation.
The gyms boast dozens of 100-pound heavy bags that are installed into floor-to-ceiling black metal frames. Inside, students can burn calories and learn self-defense during boxing and kickboxing fitness classes. When the workout's over, they can head to the pro-shop area, where padded cage walls neatly separate the goods from the rest of the gym and provide an excellent place to duke it out over whose T-shirt looks better.
The six-week Baseline tennis program at Five Seasons Family Sports Club infuses beginners ages 18 and older with a passion for the game through energetic weekly lessons. Racket rockers learn from a team of experienced pros at both the Northbrook and Burr Ridge locations, each boasting climate-controlled indoor courts and adventurous outdoor courts completely at the mercy of the climate. Students harness basic footwork, forehand, backhand, and behind-the-back no-look slam dunks in a group setting. Social events let fellow net apprentices compare notes throughout the course, including a welcome reception, a member-appreciation party, and a graduation mixer. Any student not born with rackets for arms—or who simply doesn't own one—can borrow one from the club. Classes are generally held Monday through Thursday and on Saturday, with morning, afternoon, and evening sessions available; students should call the club of their choice for complete scheduling information and sweatband fashion tips.
Each of TCBOOST's coaches trained as athletes at the collegiate or professional level. It is from these experiences that they call upon when creating dynamic workouts for pupils of all ages. Though they count NFL football players, MLB players, and Olympic athletes as some of their clients, they follow a methodology that customizes workouts for all ability levels. In doing so, they make use of their expansive facilities, which include a 60-yard sprint track, a 33-yard acceleration area on premium turf, and a 1,000-square-foot agility area.
The nine holes of Willow Hill Golf Course sprawl across 87 grassy acres before the scenic backdrop of the Chicago skyline. The par 35 course conjures up visions of the early days of golf with a Scottish links-style design winding for 2,895 yards through low rolling hills and dense rough, left high to punish errant shots and provide cover for napping golfers mid-game. Before or after a round, players can work on finesse around the greens at the 100-yard short-game practice area, or hone their hacks on the driving range, where all 40 stations mimic strokes off the fairway with grass hitting surfaces.
