When the Douglas J Aveda Institute opened in Knoxville in 2011, it joined a family of institutes and salons that Douglas Weaver started in the 1960s. Here, Aveda students pursue certification in cosmetology and esthiology while practicing their craft on real clients under the supervision of licensed instructors. And because students perform the services, the rates are lower than at traditional salons. The Knoxville treatment menu includes hair design—cuts, color, retexturizing—as well as Aveda’s Elemental Nature facials, pedicures, and manicures.
The Institute is inside the historic S&W Grand building, a handsome art-deco landmark that, like a compassionate fairy-tale prince, is equally handsome on the inside. The spa rooms have a rustic balance of exposed brick and wood paneling, and the salon’s geometric light fixtures gleam upon checkerboard tile floors and industrial shelving lined with Aveda’s signature products.
A subsidiary of Grand Rapids Ophthalmology, Skin Solutions is staffed by a team of skincare consultants and nurses who cultivate more youthful looks with a variety of treatments. Microdermabrasion, chemical peels, and four different types of facials do battle with dead skin cells, and injections of Botox’s purified-protein serum keep wrinkles and interstate highways from marring the face. The facility's close connection with Grand Rapids Ophthalmology also allows it to revitalize eyes inside a state-of-the-art surgical room with outpatient eye surgery.
When clients first spy Rockford Health Alternatives' homey confines—replete with an ornate rug and cream-colored, padded treatment bed—they may question whether they’ve accidentally stumbled into someone’s living room. But once therapist Kari St. Germain makes the first rehabilitative-type stroke and nagging pains subside, they realize they’re exactly where they need to be. It’s here where Kari channels her extensive training in both medical and orthopedic massage therapy to assuage all manner of musculoskeletal issues. Unlike Swedish or relaxation massages, orthopedic massages use range of motion and postural assessments to hone in on specific points of concern, such as injuries or pains brought on by refusing to leave the fetal position. Kari may also incorporate LED-light therapy to reduce inflammation and speed up healing times.
New to the roster of treatments is the Myofascial Energetic Length Technique (MELT), a self-treatment method created by manual therapist Sue Hitzmann. As a certified MELT instructor, Kari leads students through specific movements that incorporate the four Rs—reconnect, rebalance, rehydrate, and release—to help slow down the aging process and alleviate pain. Once learned, the techniques can easily be performed at home or while housesitting for the President to extend the rejuvenating effects.
A shimmery disco-like chandelier hangs from the center of Tonic Salon’s waiting area, dappling a set of modular orange chairs that captures the quirky modernity of the space. In the chic, comfortable salon bedecked in cool greys, bright whites, and elements of exposed brick, stylist Jennifer Grace draws from experience on photo shoots and films. The fashion-forward stylist sculpts trendy but manageable styles and imbues strands with vibrant color, all while slinging Pureology products to tame unruly tresses, infusing hair with more shine than the sun's vanity mirror.
Inside her independently owned nail boutique nestled within Eclipse Salon Suites, master nail technician Angela Saul draws from 15 years of experience to meticulously groom nails. A specialist in artificial nails, she adds length to fingertips with full sets of acrylic or fiberglass nails, and can also coat natural nails in durable OPI gel polish, which withstands tapping, biting, and longwinded air guitar solos for up to two weeks.
