SpitzerCares.org hopes to fund a million meals in 2012 through food pantries, shelters, kids’ cafés, and backpack programs. For every dollar it earns via community car washes, donations, and fundraising events, SpizerCares.org can provide four meals to northern Ohioans in need. Patrons can keep up with the organization’s progress online as a ticker shaped like an apple tallies the number of meals SpitzerCares.org has shelled out so far this year.
Drivetech provides classroom instruction to fledgling racecar drivers on a variety of professional racetracks across the country. The intro course lets you take the reins of a Porsche Boxster, a Chevy Corvette, or a formula car. After a round of basic classroom instruction and a few laps in a practice vehicle, you'll get to take the wheel for at least 15 minutes of racing on either the Willow Springs International Raceway, or Chuckwalla Valley Raceway, leaving your hair mussed, eyes bulged, and torso coated in corporate sponsorships. The experience eschews straight, open road in favor of high-speed turns, a hallmark of stock-car racing. Customers at West River Kayak & Canoe take their pick from a fleet of kayaks, canoes, and standup paddleboards to cruise down the 27-mile Vermilion-Lorain Water Trail, a Class I–II waterway. Bites into the Angus burger's manchego cheese, bacon, and avocado ($12) energize palates more effectively than garnishes of pickles infused with pop-rocks, and slices of la argentina pizza serenade taste buds with an orchestration of red peppers, hard-boiled eggs, and tomato. As they dine, guests at Nova Bar and Grill can take in the eatery’s modern, geometric décor, with ceiling-high, cylindrical-shaped columns, as well as back-lit, rectangle-shaped cutaways and chrome, chair-shaped chairs.
