Guided by the spiritual tenets of mindfulness, MindBody Health's owner, director, and teacher Diane Barnes watches over a spiritual sanctuary in her studio. In the Three Hours of Bliss renewal retreat, minds and bodies withdraw from the stressors of everyday life, focusing on the present moment and casting aside worries of morning traffic, speeding tickets, and upcoming mail-fraud trials. Because every mind and body is different, the theme and focus of every session depends on the needs of its participants—though each remains rooted in the spirit of mindfulness and balance within the individual. Previous and planned retreats include Learning to Let Go and Mindful Eating. Holding the highest of yoga training and education, Diane leads a supportive, disciplined classroom, strengthening her students' minds while expelling stress, tension, and chronic spit ballers.
Discover World Cuisine promotes local agriculture through a series of community programs that highlight locally sourced ingredients as well as the restaurants and cafeteria food fights that use them. The consortium of chefs, sommeliers, and foodies hosts cooking classes and dinners throughout the summer months that spotlight dishes from Europe, South America, and the Caribbean. Organic food and wine festivals also feature international nibbles as well as live music and giveaways.
Proceeds from the events support Discover World Cuisine’s community outreach program, which partners with area schools to introduce kids to new foods and help them develop healthy eating habits. Classroom sessions balance hands-on instruction with activity sheets to teach students to select and prepare low-cost, nutritious meals.
Neither gym nor spa, The Balance Institute cobbles together something wholly unique, blending the best of both to alleviate pain and prevent future maladies. The buzzing, anonymous atmosphere of a gym gives way to friendly, personalized attention. Trainers and massage therapists join forces, working with clients one on one to unravel the underlying cause of pain and reverse years of unhealthy habits, such as poor eating or only ever using your right arm. Personal training begins with a health assessment and veers into moves and stretches designed to strengthen bodies and assuage pain. In private rooms, massage therapists quiet the cries of sore muscles with Swedish strokes, deep-tissue work, or myofascial release therapy.
Palmetto Motorsports Complex gets adrenaline pumping with miles of bike, kart, and ATV racing terrain. During the two-day adventure, families are free to whiz around the 1/5–mile clay kart track, churn through the ATV and bike sand drag, or practice extreme parallel parking in the mud pit. Young aspiring riders can settle into their seats and tear up the pee-wee track, whose small layout can be viewed in its entirety by parents, or navigate the small jumps, berms, and tabletops on the beginner motocross course. Pros wrestle with ramps and jumps on advanced courses such as the Palmetto Supercross SX track, amble down the 5.5-mile and 7.5-mile one-way trails, or take a break with the family to quell hunger with burgers, hot dogs, and drinks from the concession stand.
Before Dez White donned the whistle and clipboard of a fitness instructor, he was a professional football player for the Chicago Bears and the Atlanta Falcons. After years on the field, Dez added an ISSA personal-training certification to his accomplishments and founded The Body Firm Atlanta, where he builds challenging, constantly varied workouts for all skill levels. The staff motivates its students by tracking their measurements and progress throughout the course.
