The Xtreme Edge gleams with row after row of cardio machines and a wall of free weights that would put Popeye's personal collection to shame. These are the tools that students use to help tone muscles and burn fat in high-intensity bootcamp classes. Beyond that, there's little you'd find in a typical gym. Flashing lights and pulsing music give the Zumba classes a palpable energy, as 75-foot screens display videos of Paul Bunyan–sized exercisers doing Zumba. Spin classes take place in a "theatre studio" that makes participants feel like they're biking through the great outdoors. You can also hone coordination in yoga sessions or exotic Bollywood dance classes. A team of experienced personal trainers is on hand at the gym to augment the enjoyability of these endeavors by motivating students and sharing pro tips for fitness and nutritional lifestyle changes.
Coach Mike Ford is no sissy. Since he was 12 years old, the dedicated athlete has been taking on extreme feats of strength and endurance that many people would never even dream of attempting—undertaking off-road triathlons, sweating through 35-hour nonstop workouts, and running 10-K races with a 50-pound log tied to his back. But when he attended his first CrossFit class, he was surprised and humbled to find that he was left exhausted by the short, intense, and challenging workout. Intrigued by this innovative program and determined to improve, Mike immediately started his own CrossFit gym in his garage.
Today, Beaverton CrossFit has expanded into a bustling CrossFit gym, where Mike, his wife Christine, and their staff of certified trainers conduct classes throughout the week. Drawing from an arsenal of dumbbells and pull-up bars, coaches lead CrossFit's signature high-intensity workouts within their well-equipped, no-frills facility. They vary routines each day to prevent muscles from becoming bored and passing notes to the bones, and motivate students throughout the routines with constant encouragement. The Beaverton CrossFit team participated in the 2012 and 2013 North West Regionals CrossFit games, where students and coaches alike placed among the top athletes, with Mike Ford taking 13th in the Masters Division in 2012 and in 2013, and coach Brian Miller taking 1st in the Northwest Regional CrossFit Games in 2013.
The three Oregon Athletic Clubs welcome members into an oasis of healthy living, each developed to encourage those aspiring to wellness to reach their fitness goals. In addition to cardio and weight equipment for solo workouts, personal trainers tailor workouts to meet individual goals and lead group yoga and Pilates sessions to strengthen and flex physiques. As parents pedal into shape in the cycling studio or unwind at the onsite spa, kids can caper about or discuss their investment portfolios in the childcare center.
At each location, patrons can practice not drowning in the indoor pools and then retire to relaxation at the locker-room saunas. The Hawthorn Farm Athletic Club invites members to splash into the outdoor pool and lounge on the lawn and patio. To refuel for the day’s cartwheel quota, the clubs’ restaurants dish up light fare including salads and paninis.
UFC Gym’s instructors thumb their noses at the suggestion that fighting has no place in public. They happily subvert this social convention, leading students through safe and noncontact fitness classes inspired by the pugilistic arts. Each boxing, kickboxing, or group MMA class is lead by a professional fighter, who teaches basic skills during the up-tempo, one-hour workouts. Students warm up with plyometrics before strapping on 6-ounce gloves and hitting a heavy bag with combination of kicks, knees, and elbows. Classes may burn between 800 and 1,000 calories per session, improve coordination and stamina, and increase your tolerance for listening to the theme from Rocky IV on repeat.
After the birth of her first child in 2001, Baby Boot Camp’s founder and certified trainer and spin and Pilates instructor Kristen Horler wanted a postnatal fitness program that didn't require her to leave her baby at the door. Her solution was to start a suit of programs just for new and expecting parents where mothers could bond with their infants while soaking up the support and camaraderie of their peers. During Strollfit sessions, certified trainers and Radio Flyers equipped with outboard motors lead ladies through innovative routines that incorporate baby-filled strollers into yoga, cardio, and strength training. For long-term fitness, coaches encourage aspiring runners to break through the tape during the 5K training program, and Kristen's own Nutrition Solutions teaches the benefits of healthy-eating habits during a four-week program designed by registered dieticians.
Snap Fitness's around-the-clock gyms enable fitness-focused members to improve their physical well-being with a cornucopia of equipment, no matter the hours they keep. Prospective perspirers don't have to let The Man or a random street man tell them when to participate in their five F.I.T. sessions, which are spread throughout the week. Each one-hour session caters to the fitness goals of its 8–12 participants, focusing on circuit and interval training and incorporating a variety of exercises such as TRX Suspension, which works several muscle groups, and kickboxing, which helps improve tone and endurance. Practice balance on a BOSU ball or agile sidewalk-crack avoidance with an agility ladder. The cardio chieftains at Snap Fitness may then walk you through plyometric exercises. Results from Snap's F.I.T. sessions can include weight loss, increased stamina, flexibility, and lean-muscle mass. Participants can bask in Snap Fitness's friendly, unintimidating atmosphere that provides a refreshing change of pace from meat-market gyms and tough elementary-school weight rooms.
