CrossFit FAST might exist in a brick-and-mortar building, but it’s probably better described as a methodology shared by its coaches and attendees. Unlike other gyms, CrossFit FAST does away with the mirrors and treadmills, leaving attendees free to focus completely on functional training movements performed at a high intensity. Whether they’re firefighters, military personnel, or private citizens, they relentlessly pursue challenging fitness classes that increase full-body strength and endurance. The core of their fitness philosophy focuses on the titular CrossFit program, a series of functional-movement exercises that changes daily and requires participants to increase their work capacity across broad time and modal domains.
Beyond CrossFit, exercisers train in weightlifting, krav maga, and nutritional coaching. The fitness routines produce results, leading some members to be successful in CrossFit competitions, and others to take home titles such as 2011 National Champion Olympic Lifter and 2012 and 2013 California State Champion Olympic Lifter.
Golf isn't like a lot of other sports. While youngsters can easily head to the playground to shoot baskets, toss a football, or chase birds, expenses associated with golf equipment, greens fees, and travel prevent many from ever taking up the game.
Better Golf for Kids doesn't think it has to be this way. The organization and its army of nationally recognized instructors remove all of these barriers when they show up at elementary schools, parks, and public courses across the country, ready to acquaint children with the great fitness- and discipline-building game. Teachers bring mats, clubs, balls, and tees?everything a young player would need?to after-school and summer camp programs, and set about teaching good golf swings and breeding a passion for physical activity. In the 20 years since it was founded, thousands of youngsters have enrolled in the year-round program, enriching young lives while expanding the game to new generations.
Director Marianne Van Etten and her troupe of instructors help to inject steps with traditional American and international rhythms during interrelated lessons. The curriculum helps students of all experience levels to confidently navigate the dance floor without surgically removing a second left foot. Three-hour weekend workshops immerse students in the instruction of swing, Latin, and smooth techniques in one dose, and group classes gather guests for 55 minute sessions in styles including yoga and children's ballroom. Classes unfold inside the air-conditioned studio, which accommodates up to 75 dancers atop its spring-loaded wood floor. Further inspiring lofty steps, a stereo sound system floods the space, which overlooks views of mountainous terrain symbolizing the uphill battle faced when tangoing with both hands tied behind your back.
Holding certifications from organizations such as the American Mountain Guide Association, the guides behind OnRope Consulting formed the rock-climbing school to offer training for all levels of climbers. Held at one of the many mountainous locations surrounding Los Angeles, onsite classes range from introductory-level climbs to personal training. Beyond helping outdoorsman scale summits, the guides organize wilderness adventure trips, including sea kayaking, whitewater rafting, or backpacking across California's rugged, awe-inspiring terrains. For groups, they also lead team-building programs that bring people together through activities such as rope courses, camping, and hair-braiding circles.:m]]
Professional tennis player Sam Querrey has been ranked in the ATP’s top 20 players in the world—but that may never have happened if it wasn’t for Tim Schnaible. Schnaible served as Querrey’s personal coach in the tennis star’s formative years of 10–16, helping mold his big serve and net-charging game into one of the world’s most formidable talents. Today, as the owner and director of tennis at Match Tough Tennis Academy, Schnaible continues to train players with the help of a staff of former high school, college, and USTA standouts. The Academy offers group lessons for adults and juniors of all abilities, as well as pro-shop services including racket stringing with a 24-hour turnaround.
California's hills paint a jagged horizon in the distance. Catalina Island sits regally in the sparkling water. Famed Malibu beaches teem with surfers.
