Monarchs National Gymnastics Training Center furnishes the facilities and equipment necessary for young tumblers to develop their skills. The center staffs experienced coaches to teach students during sundry group classes that encourage camaraderie. Choose any four consecutive one-hour classes for aspiring Olympians or unwittingly aspiring Olympians, including co-ed kinder classes designed for ideally low-to-the-ground toddlers or a boys-and-girls tumbling session—for ages 6–18—that teaches kids the easiest ways to catapult themselves out of a room during awkward silences or boring lectures. All-girls and all-boys classes are available for kids aged 6–18, and a girls' cheer class prepares sprightly young ones for futures as high-school pep leaders.
Instructor Jodi Conroy embraced The Bar Method lifestyle while learning from and eventually teaching under its creator, Burr Leonard. Jodi then opened her own franchises in an effort to acquaint more Californians with The Bar Method's signature mix of interval training, isometric exercises, dance-conditioning moves, and low-impact techniques gleaned from physical therapy. During routines, patrons unfurl legs and stretch spines into balance-affirming positions, often utilizing a ballet bar for leverage rather than anchoring legs in recycled Christmas-tree stands. The muscle-lengthening workouts build stamina while streamlining physiques and have garnered praise from such celebrities as Drew Barrymore and Anna Paquin. The Santa Barbara Independent has commended Jodi's "clean and pleasant" Santa Barbara studio, as well as its "personable and funny instructors [who] do an excellent job of supporting each student."
The Better Golf Academy emerged from a straightforward goal: golf instructor James Pugliese wanted to develop a curriculum that would simplify the golf swing. Though originally designed for children, Pugliese's six-step approach helps golfers of all ages on their path to a straighter and longer ball flight free of upside-down loop. Golfers who learn under his curriculum will zero in on the mechanics for a successful grip, setup, takeaway, backswing, downswing, and finish, shaping their swing in easy-to-understand increments. Pugliese's model has proven so effective that it now has grown into an international, spikey-soled footprint.
A red carpet leads the way past a cluster of spotlights, and two large lacquered doors grant access to a low-lit room. Conversation buzzes, layered over the underlying thumping of music that emanates throughout the space. It's the quintessential modern nightclub, but Sunset Room is alive with old-school Hollywood glamour; it's decorated with crystal chandeliers and dark wood, aesthetic touches that are the very antithesis of stale chain restaurants or picnic tables set up in a cave. In the dining room, white tablecloths rest beneath the light of flickering candles, and small plates encourage sharing bites of flatbread and steak sliders. Reserved seating can make guests feel extra special, and live bands and DJs start dance parties on the dance floor. A team of mixologists also arrives on the scene to shake and stir a variety of craft cocktails and drinks at the towering bar.
The elegant mixture of cuisine, libations, and decor that constitutes Sunset Room is the brainchild of Chris Breed and James Ashford. Since 1990, Chris has been improving nightlife in Hollywood, first with the Roxbury Supper Club and now with Sunset. Chris teams up with James, who has a background as an LAPD officer and a real-estate man.
CrossFit FAST might exist in a brick-and-mortar building, but it’s probably better described as a methodology shared by its coaches and attendees. Unlike other gyms, CrossFit FAST does away with the mirrors and treadmills, leaving attendees free to focus completely on functional training movements performed at a high intensity. Whether they’re firefighters, military personnel, or private citizens, they relentlessly pursue challenging fitness classes that increase full-body strength and endurance. The core of their fitness philosophy focuses on the titular CrossFit program, a series of functional-movement exercises that changes daily and requires participants to increase their work capacity across broad time and modal domains.
Beyond CrossFit, exercisers train in weightlifting, krav maga, and nutritional coaching. The fitness routines produce results, leading some members to be successful in CrossFit competitions, and others to take home titles such as 2011 National Champion Olympic Lifter and 2012 and 2013 California State Champion Olympic Lifter.
