In addition to sabers, fencing coaches Dan Berliner wields a razor-sharp resume; Dan won the USA Fencing National Championship in 2011, 2012, and 2013 and is a former member of the USA Fencing World Cup team. At SON DuelLIFE Olympic Fencing Center, our coaches divulge their secrets during classes for students as young as age 4, covering everything from fundamentals to advanced techniques. As their pupils learn to parry and repost, the teachers strive to also impart less tangible virtues such as honor and the determination to read The Three Musketeers in its original French. As a testament to the duo's success, many of the center's past protégés have gone on to compete on the national circuit in numerous divisions.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Our small classes allow us to work with YOUR body even within a class format.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
[The] best improvements happen in people who are working with special conditions such as back pain/injury, shoulder/hip problems. Besides that, for those on the lean side the body becomes very toned and posture improves significantly.
What is the biggest mistake you see people make when trying to get fit on their own?
Most people don't have a plan or structure. Also, they do not adjust their food intake.
Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?
We have a small and intimate studio. We know everyone's name, special needs, goals, and how to get them there. We do not however give "workouts." We teach you how to move efficiently, get you strong internally, and aim for a lightly moving body.

Kat Loren established Rockstar Recording Studio Parties to give kids the experience of laying down tracks in a professional recording studio while having fun with friends. It's no coincidence that she has all these things assembled in one place; when not hosting kids' parties, the studio serves as an active recording space for professional artists. "Many celebrities have recorded with us," Kat says, adding that her favorite part of the job is just "being in the music business and watching potential rockstars emerge." That's why she enjoys throwing open the doors and inviting kids just to have fun. She supplies them with keyboards, drums, and electric guitars. After the session, the engineer edits, mixes, and burns personalized CDs for all the guests.
On any given day, Push Fitness’s 4,000 square feet of workout space are filled with people swinging kettlebells, curling free weights, and running on treadmills. But that doesn't mean the center has no room for variety. In fact, the gym's personal trainers spend their days creating custom workouts for individuals, couples, and small groups. Depending on what clients are trying to accomplish, they might end up in Body Blast classes that emphasize weight loss, or they could try yoga classes, which help build lean muscle and improve flexibility. Some might also benefit from POZ fitness sessions, which are designed for people with HIV-related metabolic conditions.
