  • Oakland Fitness Company
Boring workouts are a thing of the past at Oakland Fitness Company. Depending on the day, trainees might find themselves swinging a kettlebell on the sidewalk, wielding a battle rope, or busting out sets of BOSU ball pushups. The large, open-layout gym accommodates a variety of training, from one-one-one or small-group sessions to larger classes. Students can build strength and endurance with TRX suspension training, calisthenics, plyometrics, weight training, and agility drills, and work on flexibility and recovery with foam rolling and stretching. Owner, trainer, and nutrition consultant Mike Beatrice founded Oakland Fitness Company in 2012 with the hopes of not only providing a place for students to cross train, but also to provide nutritional guidance. He offers one-on-one nutrition training and provides specifically designed meal programs to help trainees achieve better overall health.

There are 14 heavy bags, each surrounded by plenty of floorspace so trainees can maneuver as they recreate scenes from Rocky or choreograph exciting new scenes for Steel Magnolias. For a more immersive education, the trainers host boxing boot camps, in which students soak up techniques for success in the sweet science, such as defensive tactics, combinations, and footwork?all the while roasting scores of calories.

  • bePhysique
At PHYSIQA, the instructors believe in the power of graceful movement, posture, and breath?which can be useful not just in the studio during mat or barre Pilates classes, but to create overall wellness and transform self-perceptions. A friendly, noncompetitive studio environment helps put all clients at ease, regardless of experience or fitness levels. The staff animates that spirit as they help students improve their form and challenge their bodies to create graceful, dancer-esque physiques without any pressure to wear a tutu?unlike at a job on the tutu assembly line. Certified instructor Annabel Castaldo leads the staff, and she has 14 years of experience teaching Pilates, yoga, and Lotte Berk method?based classes.
