Every year, the NCAA men's basketball tournament is a three-week saga of single-elimination suspense, where athletic juggernauts must fight for their records and overlooked programs have the chance to shine. In 2006, the George Mason Patriots penned their own March Madness Cinderella story by unseating powerhouses Michigan State, North Carolina, and Connecticut to become the lowest seed ever to advance to the Final Four. The Patriots' historic run left fans gasping for air and basketballs everywhere reaching for the nearest pump before the team finally bowed out to the eventual champions, Florida, in the national semifinal.
Though the Patriots' Final Four berth garnered tremendous national attention, George Mason's athletic prowess extends beyond the basketball court. In their proud history, the Patriots have won NCAA championships in multiple sports, including men's indoor track and field and women's soccer.
Fencing Sports Academy teaches students to parry, lunge, and riposte in fencing classes that cater to everyone from beginners to Olympic-level competitors. Head coach Ervin Szucs previously worked as head coach for the Hungarian National Team and has trained U.S.A. North American Cup gold medalists and World Team members. In classes split by age and skill level, new students learn basic foot movements and guards while more advanced fencers explore tip control and complicated maneuvers, all while brandishing blunt-tipped swords or unsharpened rubber chickens.
Virginia University of Oriental Medicine was founded to introduce traditional East Asian medicine to Western practitioners and the community. When the licensed acupuncturists aren't leading classes and clinical training in acupuncture and herbology, they practice their craft on patients with complaints ranging from anxiety to high blood pressure.
The Taste of Scuba course introduces aspiring mermen and maids to the basic underwater breathing techniques in a safe, unthreatening environment. The two-hour class takes place in a portion of The Dive Shop's indoor pool that is only three feet deep, letting students experience the sensation of weightlessness without the weightiness of realizing that you're just a small fish in a shark's pond. The Dive Shop provides students with all necessary equipment (except towels and bathing suits), and highly trained instructors helpfully demonstrate how to operate the gadgetry, both underwater and in the case of bathroom emergencies. If your taste test of scuba piques your aqueous appetite, speak to one of the friendly and informed instructors about seeking additional training opportunities, getting your hands on some gear of your own, or gobbling up the glory of one of earth's all-natural bowls of seafood soup.

ScienZminds engineers build armies of robots every day, but they don’t pose much danger to humanity—even children can control them. Which they do. Using Lego kits, sensors, motors, and age-appropriate programming software, elementary- and middle-school students fashion bots that interact with the world around them and carry out instructions. Beyond the robots, ScienZminds’ educators lead several other classes that get kids excited about science, math, technology, and engineering. For instance, an electronics course uses circuit boards to build devices including an organ that reacts to light and a lie detector to help figure out which parent really ate the Halloween candy.
