The eclectic backgrounds of the 13 instructors at Agape Yoga Studio are represented in the diverse selection of more than 15 class types they offer for students of all ability levels. Calling upon experience and certifications in iyengar, asthanga, and meditation-based styles, they lead students through power vinyasa flow sessions, classes that focus on core strength, and five courses that use the facility’s yoga wall. There, students can hang bands from one of five levels of wall hooks to open up their shoulders and hips or practice back bends for a more flexible spine.
After founding Yoga to Go Studio in 2008, certified instructor Linda Jones passed the baton to Kynan Katzman, one of her long-time students. The transition merited a profile by Mehlville-Oakville Patch_, partly because of Katzman’s impressive resumé, which includes endurance cycling. Under the leadership of both Jones and Katzman, the studio has introduced budding yogis to Anusara and Hatha yoga, as well as several forms of meditation geared toward students of all experience levels.
Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing with the Stars' two-time champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 600 calories with each go-round.
24 Hour Fitness keeps its doors open day and night so members can sculpt bodies and fitness goals on their own time with a potpourri of group classes, cardio equipment, free weights, athletic courts, and an indoor-lap pool. Armed with a 30-day membership to the recently opened Houston Rice Village Club, gym-goers kick off fresh workout routines with a complimentary fitness orientation filled with advice from personal trainers on health goals, how to use equipment, and how to interpret nightmares of being chased by dumbbells. Add fresh layers of physicality with TRX suspension-training equipment before playing a round in the racquetball court or letting sneakers squeak out healthful sonnets on the practice basketball court. Members can sign up for an array of group fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, and Les Mills workouts ranging from martial-arts-inspired body combat to RPM, which pairs thumping beats with a stationary bike ride through imaginary mountains and ethereal monsoons. Cap off workouts by ducking into the sauna or taking one final lap in the whirlpool.
Todd Beckman, a three-decade veteran of the fitness industry, was curious to find out what works and what doesn't at big-name health clubs. After compiling his extensive research and drawing from his own experience, he set out to create the ideal gym. Hence, Xist Fitness was born. Beckman made sure to jam-pack the floors with rows of treadmills, ellipticals, and stationary bikes, as well as to include a dimly lit Cardioflix cardio theater where members can distract themselves from their increased heartbeats by watching a movie or loudly guessing the dialogue before its spoken. Beckman also incorporated equipment designed to facilitate functional training workouts, including Power Systems and TRX training equipment.
Members who decide to upgrade can enjoy the facility's tanning services, massage beds, and red-light-therapy treatments.
1-2-3's environmentally friendly machines (powered by neither electricity nor ground-up polar bears, just human energy) are easy to use and designed to maximize fitness without causing stressful joint impacts and muscle soreness. As you plow through the half-hour circuit-training sessions, you can guzzle free filtered water and mop up distracting sweat beads with complimentary towel service. Gym-goers will also receive four personal-training sessions with qualified, friendly trainers. The facility eliminates the stress and intimidation of larger gyms and gives working out the same familiar experience of the neighborhood pub. Shape up for shorter hemlines; rev up muscles to become more useful changing office water cooler barrels; or strut around with enviable calves after a few months of sessions at 1-2-3 Fit.
