In the late '80s, Cheryl Armato was so inspired by her fitness instructor, Michelle, she became a fitness instructor, herself. Since 1988, she's been inspiring others to reach goals through many types of fitness, including Pilates, paddle-board fitness, indoor and outdoor bootcamps, and cross-training. She also understands the power of language, using uplifting phrases and anecdotes to push her charges to their limits. Today, she adds dance-fitness Zumba and yoga-Pilates fusion classes to the mix. There's even classes for kids, such as Zumba Kids Jr., preschool art and play, mommy and me sensational sensory, and KidZanity, a fitness program focused on building confidence, strength, and character.
At the Four Seasons Ballroom, veteran personal trainer and fitness instructor Tara Romano commandeers the dance floor in the name of fitness, helming Zumba classes and boot camps that fuse cardio work, plyometrics, and strength training techniques. Tara also customizes workout regimens during personal training sessions to help clients safely reach their fitness goals, debunking the myth that the only way to get in shape is to steal Jack LaLanne’s foam muscle suit. Tara also brings her fitness expertise to celebrations, helming specialized, fitness-oriented birthday parties.

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
Exercising alone takes a lot of self-discipline. Although it is done, there is that fraction of people who need motivation. One-on-one training with a certified personal trainer can certainly give you that extra push to obtain your body goals. And, if that doesn't suit you, then group training with a friend or aerobics classes can motivate a client. It's social, fun, and a great workout.
What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?
A person who hired a personal trainer for one year told us he went through a divorce, let alcohol consume him, gained excessive weight, and suffered depression. He knew it was time for a change, so he took the initiative to join the gym and hire a personal trainer. He not only lost 55 pounds, but also rejuvenated his spirit. We were very very proud of his transformation.
Fueled by a desire to offer their clients fun and motivating ways to stay active, The Action Room's instructors lead myriad classes, from ballroom dancing to country line dancing to Zumba fitness. For those preparing for a wedding or formal touchdown celebration, the instructors teach private and group dance lessons that cover all the major ballroom moves. In addition to leading dance-focused classes, the instructors set pupils' hearts pumping during fitness-based classes that include cardio kickboxing, TRX suspension training, and yoga. High-octane boot camps prepare bodies for the beach, and tummy-centered Pilates workouts help patrons build solid core muscles to deflect any flailing limbs on the dance floor.
If there's one thing the coaches at Fit NJ, LLC have, it's experience—a lot of it. Owner Clint Messiter alone has spent more than 12 years as a personal trainer, with expertise in athletic training and sports medicine. He's surrounded himself with individuals of comparable acumen. Cofounder Abigail Higgins is a professional figure competitor, and four-time Iron Man competitor Pam Giese touts certifications as a trainer, yoga teacher, and nutrition instructor. Together, this team of exercise sages has been whipping Fit NJ clients into shape since 2011, and they currently also lead boot camps six days per week.
