The United States Marine Corps' AV-8B Harrier defies all logic. Is it a jet? Is it a helicopter? In truth, it's a bit of both. The aircraft and all 22,000 of its pounds can take off vertically and hover in one place?but once it moves, the harrier blasts forward at near-supersonic speeds, making it almost fast enough to outrun the chorus of "Danger Zone."
That impressive display of aeronautical engineering is just one of the attractions at the OC Air Show, including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, which soar through the sky in complex formations while the U.S. Navy Seals Leap Frogs leave the aircraft entirely and parachute down through the sky. Pilot Greg Connell turns flight into dance within the cockpit of his Pitts Model 12?an aerobatic biplane perfect for executing loops.
While there's no charge for looking towards the clouds, the OC Air Show does offer some premium viewing areas. The Drop Zone adds food and drink, professional narration of the show, and sight-lines right into the center of the action. Sixty-four lucky people also get to watch from a raised VIP Skybox, while even more can go right out onto the water to see fish peek out from the surface, longing for the day they'll learn to fly.
Doctor of Chiropractic Stacy Cohen founded First State Health & Wellness shortly after he received his degree from New York Chiropractic College in 1984. Since then, his center has expanded to six locations and welcomed aboard 12 other chiropractic physicians.
Each location features traditional adjustment techniques and Activator tools that rapidly and gently prod trouble spots. A few locations feature specialty techniques such as the Newark location's high-tech subluxation scanning and the Wilmington location's adjustable Thompson Terminal Point table made up of several different cushions that help it morph into an even more therapeutic surface: a ping-pong table.
Dr. Cohen and his staff complement their chiropractic touch with acupuncture, massage, and nutritional counseling services, which are overseen by the center's own licensed acupuncturists and certified massage therapists. Together, the team's collective efforts have been awarded The News Journal's Reader's Choice Award for Best Chiropractic Office in 2010, 2011, and 2012, as well as the BBB's Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics in 2003 and 2009.
Red lanterns shower the Kaya Wellness Center in warm light, and dark wood shelves of colorful yoga mats and vases filled with peacock feathers and orchids carve out a serene space for yoga classes and workshops throughout the week. Atop the studio's hardwood floors, certified yoga instructors lead group classes and private training sessions in a diverse range of traditions, including prenatal yoga, men's yoga, and aerial yoga, a low-flying variation of Hatha that suspends yogis from hammocks. During the summer, instructors lead classes on the scenic shores of local beaches to give the sun a chance to salute back.
Additionally, the center houses a whole crew of holistic healers. The roster includes reiki masters, certified massage therapists, hypnotherapists, and an honest-to-god shaman, all of whom promote physical and spiritual balance and healing through a wide range of modalities, ranging from massages to herbal healing sessions.
The creative styling team at Salon LaRoc keeps up to date better than the New York Times. Well, that?s a stretch, but the squad of hair-tamers includes a curly-hair expert and strives to stay informed about the latest haircare technology. Their cutting-edge cuts, color services, and formal and bridal styles brought home Delaware Today's Best of Delaware 2011 award. Staffers employ the Yunsey and Unite lines for hair, as well as Paul Mitchell, and OPI products for nail services touching up broken vases after throwing a party at their parents? homes. One of their long-lasting no-chip pedicures can begin with a soothing foot soak in a cushy spa throne. The salon's elegant floral accents, dark-wood floors, and shuttered doors create a quaint, shabby-chic atmosphere.
Under the watchful eye of owners Jose Perez and Yolanda Pineda, Mariachi Restaurant's culinary team builds homemade Mexican, Spanish, and Latin American cuisine from a catalogue of authentic and fusion-based recipes. The hearty dishes run the gamut from grilled chicken breast resting atop homemade durango sauce to charcoal-broiled pork marinated with imported Mayan spices that singe the true date of the apocalypse into the meat. Barkeeps man the restaurant's two watering holes, keeping fine wines and spirits flowing as feasts unfold in a dining room ornamented with white linens and paintings on the wall. Mariachis amble through semiprivate dining rooms to enliven soirees, and on the second-floor outdoor patio, guest sup alfresco overlooking the beach and boardwalk below.
