Mission Hills Nursery draws from a long tradition of horticulture, as it was founded in 1910 by renowned green thumb and urban-green-space advocate Kate Sessions. Year after year, rows of roses, shrubs, and vegetables have sprung up under the staff's doting hands and dangled morsels of plant food. A section for gardening accessories equips yard workers with trowels, thorn strippers, and organic fertilizers to motivate crops without scourging them with caustic chemicals. In addition to tending to its plants, Mission Hills Nursery's staff arranges landscapes with garden-design services and teaches clients to arrange their own through gardening classes.

Dave, the owner of Leucadia Succulents, joined the horticultural marketplace 45 years ago. Although he started out selling cut flowers, he gradually shifted his focus to succulents and landscape plants.

Today, he populates his greenhouse with succulents such as the Echeveria ?Ruffle Leaf,? which grows in rosettes and blooms salmon-red flowers, as well as the Mirror Plant ?Marble Queen,? which has glossy leaves that shimmer in orange, red, green, and gold. With one of the largest succulent collections in Diego County, Leucadia Succulents also stocks the purple-streaked Echeveria nodulosa and the flowering Kalanchoe blossfeldiana. While the average plant costs around $10, the succulents range from $2 to $25.

In addition to helping customers navigate this plant emporium, Dave offers expert tips on plant care. He can lend insight on how often to water a succulent or how to discipline a houseplant that leaves messes all over the house when you go to work.

Since the early 1970s, Sunshine Gardens has been many San Diegans' favorite garden center, its extensive layout and comprehensive selection drawing gardeners of all varieties. Billed as the city's oldest and largest, this natural wonderland is actually much more than a nursery. Sure, yard beautifiers can stock up on seeds and start a succulent vegetable garden. But with goats to pet, pies to munch on, and eco-friendly art to bring home, Sunshine is probably better-described as a sprawling celebration of the seasons. The center also offers local delivery for when you can't fit a tree on the back of your bike, as well as tips on how to plant and care for plants.
