The 10 experienced instructors and wellness practitioners at Abundant Joy Yoga & Wellness share their expertise through an array of yoga and martial arts classes and healing services. The studio offers several styles of yoga, from beginner level to Aerial Yoga, along with group classes and one-on-one private sessions, private retreats, and even stand-up paddle board yoga during July and August.
Inside the tranquil Serenity Room, students explore holistic health from a variety of angles, including private sessions of energy-balancing Reiki, Thai Bodywork, Integrative Chakra Healing, and Cranio-Sacral Therapy. Once a month, the room also hosts thermography imaging sessions, which assess and address the inflamed muscles and nerve dysfunction associated with conditions such as fibromyalgia, TMJ, and diverticulitis.
Driven by a desire to share the life-changing potential of martial arts, Dean Konley founded American Dojo in 1994. But his journey to that point wasn’t easy. As a child, Konley struggled with dyslexia, a condition that followed him into adolescence. Weighed down by bullying and constant frustration, he resorted to destructive behavior. Then, Konley found martial arts. Practicing martial arts gave Konley an outlet, and it quickly became a source of the success, discipline, and self-confidence he’d lacked in other areas of life. Konley earned his first black belt in 1986 and hasn’t quit progressing since.
Today, alongside his wife, Virginia, and a staff of highly trained instructors, Konley heads two American Dojo locations. Both of Konley’s facilities are family-oriented, and both offer classes for students as young as 4. Beyond empowering its members through goal-oriented lessons and programs, American Dojo opens its doors for birthday parties, too, allowing youngsters to burn off energy in a more positive manner than teaching the dog how to count cards at the casino.
Brimming with Matrix fitness equipment, free weights, and muscle-toning cable machines, Nova Gyms inspires guests to build well-rounded workouts that incorporate strength training and cardiovascular conditioning. Friendly staffers welcome exercisers of all levels with gratis equipment orientations, teaching them how to board stair-steppers safely and reason with surly dumbbells. Fitness seekers customize presses and lifts at the functional trainer, which lets them add or subtract weights at their convenience. A half-dozen elliptical machines help members trace low-impact circles with their feet, and three recumbent bikes simulate rickshaw-based limbo contests. Guests can also gallop on treadmills equipped with 15-inch personal TVs to keep their minds occupied while their bodies get sweaty.
