If you're near a traversable waterway in Utah on a sunny summer day, chances are good that you'll run someone gliding along on a stand-up paddleboard. Many of these watery wayfarers travel courtesy of board's rented out by Paddleboard in Utah's extensive network of local affiliates. The outposts unlock access to some of the best boarding sites in and around Salt Lake City; The Lodge at Stillwater welcomes guests eager to explore the Jordanelle Reservoir, while Lindon Marina serves as a jumping-off point for Utah Lake's extensive wetlands. Some, such as Gonzo Boat Rentals and Tours, pull double duty, operating shops at both Antelope Island and the Great Salt Lake State Marina. Others, such as On The Pond Fitness and Rentals, pair their rentals with fitness routines performed atop the waters of Willard Bay State Park. While most of the shops remain close to greater SLC, at least one encourages more far-ranging expeditions; situated near Cedar City along the state's southern border, DIG Paddlesports helps travelers access the inviting waters of Sand Hollow and Quail Creek State Parks.
The Ogden Nature Center indulges natural instincts with a 152-acre preserve and education center filled with exhibits and programming for all ages. Families spend a day traversing 1.5 miles of trails and climbing up the observation tower. The Birdhouse Trail boasts over 100 creative and imaginative birdhouses, with new houses added each year. Hungry explorers can unwrap sandwiches at a picnic grove before stopping by Arrowhead Pond to scan for cormorants or painted turtles wielding brushes in their mouths to daub each other?s shells. The nearby mews host injured or dependent birds of prey, such as Red-tailed Hawks, or Great-Horned Owls.
WSU Wildcat Lanes' eight bowling lanes, 12 billiard tables, and other indoor games are open to the entire community, not just Weber State students and those who write their textbooks. That means local families and seasoned bowlers are welcome to take on the 10-pin setup each lane offers, along with automatic scoring and bumpers. The facility's 12 billiard tables, shuffleboard court, and air hockey tables are also available for supplementary gaming. Wildcat Lanes also features a snack bar where corn dogs, nachos, and fountain drinks are the top grabs.
The Front Climbing Club has attracted a crew of passionate setters and climbers with various outdoor-climbing experience, earned while climbing around the world. The staff brings this knowledge to its route setting, filling the 20,000-square-foot space with bouldering routes and top-roping walls that will boggle the mind and body like a kiss from Albert Einstein. Instructors lead these climbing and bouldering classes as well as training sessions, either teaching the fundamentals or helping attendees of virtually any age and skill level master more advanced techniques. Also offered are yoga classes and a full array of strength and cardio equipment, which can provide year-round conditioning training. The Front runs afterschool kids’ programs and camps, helping young climbers hone skills needed for teamwork and concentration. The club's pro shop also keeps visitors prepared for climbing excursions by allowing them to stock up on specialty supplies, including rock shoes, ropes, alpine and ice gear, and training equipment.
Though some participants choose to run and others to walk, everybody who participates in the Color Dash experiences a transformation. As participants make their way through the 5K Color Dash and UVSplash courses they are subjected to bursts of color; additional events include the Bubble Bash by Color Dash and Zombies by Color Dash, which adds the undead to the equation. Though the color will wash away, the memories will remain forever in the minds of all participants who aren't goldfish. Proceeds from Color Dash events benefit local children's charities and organizations.
Since 1997, the Ogden Raptors have been hitting grand slams and confounding opponents with curveballs at Lindquist Field. This farm team for the Los Angeles Dodgers draws enthusiastic crowds for numerous reasons. First and foremost is the talented roster, of course, but fans also come for the view from the field, which offers a gorgeous panorama of local hills.
