Lounging feels perfectly natural at Arabian Clouds. The hookah bar remains open until as late as 3 a.m. throughout the week, encouraging passersby to stop in, gather around the glowing coals of one of the Khalil Mamoon hookahs, and enjoy a round of Arabian coffee or tea with the shisha. The lounge also plays eclectic mixes of pop, hip-hop, rock, and contemporary Arabian music, and guest DJs stop in to perform and energize crowds on the weekends.

At two locations, The Other Place’s staff fires up ovens to bake pizzas, italian subs, and sandwiches to a golden brown—the color of Pharaoh’s mask after he eats a chocolate bar. Atop hand-made pizza crusts made from a 40-year-old recipe, the kitchen team layers toppings such as italian sausage, salami, and sun-dried tomatoes, lubricated by tomato, alfredo, and barbecue sauce. Submarine-shaped bread holds italian meats, veggies, and toppings. In both eateries’ dining areas, more than 50 TVs stream sports games. The Other Place also often entertains guests with karaoke—America’s most underappreciated sport, and the one with the least funding in most school districts.

Much like a phoenix rising from the ashes of a disused building, Overtime Sports Bar & Grill came to life in the shell of a former bar. After completely gutting the space, the new owners set to work remodeling for an opening heralded by media such as the Kansas City Star and the Pitch. They constructed a custom 30-foot granite-topped bar and a custom walk-in tap room, and filled the floor with tables ready to welcome an entire platoon of rowdy guests. Today, behind that custom bar, bartenders pour more than 50 draft beers—including several brews by local Boulevard Brewing Co. and Free State Brewing Co. A casual pub menu compliments the drink list with entrees ranging from burgers to customizable mac 'n' cheese to grilled tilapia. Fulfilling the pub's sports-centric identity, three projection TVs and 36 flat-screen TVs cast guests' upturned faces in the gentle, victory-filled glow of live events from leagues both near and far.

Granite City Food & Brewery, a casual family restaurant founded by hospitality experts, has an on-site brewery and a menu stuffed with more steak, seafood, pasta, flatbread pizza, burger, and sandwich options than Abe Lincoln had dollar bills stuffed in his top hat. Gourmet pub-grub appetizers and many other generously portioned dishes are listed alongside the beers that bring out their flavors. The intoxicating taste of the inebriated vodka mussels ($12.99) is suggested alongside Northern Light––a light creamy beer––and the juicy, tender meatiness of a 14-ounce New York strip ($25.99) is advised along with Brother Benedict’s bock––a brownish German-style lager. Others among Granite City Food & Brewery's six specialty brews are the Irish-style Broad Axe stout, known for its nose of roasted chocolate and coffee notes, and Duke Of Wellington, an IPA with muscle-bound malt character and a deep-seated dislike of Napoleon.

More than a decade ago, a moose with azure fur wandered into a Prairie Village bar and became a regular, sipping on spirits and chatting up locals. This tall tale about the founding of Blue Moose Bar & Grill might not be exactly true, but it does evoke the laid-back vibe of the eatery's two locations, inside each of which a crazily grinning moose head overlooks the dining room. Brews babble from taps as chefs whip up pub fare with creative twists—fusion-inspired chipotle remoulade bedecks crab cakes, and sliced pickles sizzle in house-made beer batter till they reach a crispy, golden hue. The Overland Park location invites local musicians to fill the air with tunes each Friday, and the Prairie Village restaurant hosts art fairs, seasonal wine dinners, and other events throughout the year. During warmer months, both Blue Moose locations extend dining service onto spacious patios or mobile booths carried by passing bison
