At Core Jeet Kune Do, instructors teach a functional fighting system that has been refined and battle tested for over fifteen years. Shaun “Ming” Rudie and Phillip “Thunder” Richardson teach a multi-disciplinary brand of fighting that integrates elements of kickboxing, boxing, ground grappling, and defense against armed attackers or overenthusiastic aunts. Classes emphasize an awareness of one’s surrounding, mobility, and adaptation to the realities of fight-stress through detailed instruction and live sparring.
Standing atop a board, a paddler rhythmically dips an oar into Old Tampa Bay's sparkling waters, smoothly skimming the surface while soaking in views of the sun sinking beyond the horizon. Tampa Bay SUP's team welcomes the uninitiated and veterans alike to experience this for themselves via paddleboard lessons and rentals. Their lessons last 20 minutes before students are free to enjoy leisurely paddling, which affords lofty vantage points from which to gaze upon marine wildlife and boosts core strength so that students may wrestle the animals into submission. Once they are ready to go out on their own, paddlers can request that staffers bring boards to various launch sites around the Tampa/Clearwater region, or pick them up at Tampa Bay SUP's beachside shops. Tampa Bay SUP also rents kayaks with all the necessary equipment included, sells paddleboards, and gives tours.
Keeping it simple. That’s how Elite Ballroom’s instructors engage students in ballroom and Latin dancing. Taking it step by step, they give everyone the confidence and skills to hit the dance floor at any time and for all special events. They offer group classes, as well as private lessons, and hold open dance socials where everyone can strut their stuff.
A five-time American Taekwondo Association World Champion, chief master Von Schmeling, began Victory Martial Arts to teach pupils confidence and leadership skills while imparting martial-arts techniques. Classes capped at 30 students, with at most 10 students per instructor, cover disciplines such as general martial arts, krav maga, and self-defense for thwarting assailants and heavily armed spiders. Budding martial artists hone their craft alongside loved ones in family sessions or practice maneuvers in age-specific sequences for kids, teens, or adults.
Carved into the natural landscape of the wetlands, Lansbrook Golf Club has been a favorite amongst golfers since opening in 1975 for its variety of layout challenges. A framework of trees and tall cypress hugs the course's tight fairways, and not a single parallel fairway means every shot requires a bit of ingenuity. As if that weren't enough, water comes into play on 16 holes, forcing players to either select their clubs carefully or outfit their balls with snorkels. Fans of the Masters may get a kick from the 11th hole, too, which is reminiscent of the 16th hole at Augusta National.
Away from the links, Lansbrook punctuates visits with a meticulously maintained practice facility. It features a large grass teeing ground, a chipping green with a sand bunker, and a putting green.
