MPC Models works to attract, manage, and prepare potential talent for the modeling world. A staff of knowledgeable photographers sets up in-studio photo-sessions for new models so that they might gain first-hand studio experience and develop signature styles and looks, aided by the support of make-up artists and wardrobe stylists. The shutterbugs also snap headshots, providing those in the corporate, realty, or acting world with relatable portraits to send to clients and agents, or to tape to their faces in the event of a bad hair day. Outside of its modeling forte, the studio also captures shots of families and pets during more low-key photo shoots.
The consortium of professional instructors at Palm Harbor Dance Studio shepherds students of all ages and skill levels through lessons that span the style spectrum. Low-pressure private sessions allow enthusiastic teachers to fine-tune individual students' techniques and form, using their expert eyes and mechanical dancing shoes preprogrammed to do the cha-cha. Patrons can learn how to cavort through classic waltz and foxtrot romps or swivel through the modern steps of salsa, swing, or samba.
The Transitions Championship, an official PGA TOUR event, pits formidable golf kings—such as two-time winner Retief Goosen and 2010 winner Jim Furyk—against the lush greens and brutal traps of the Innisbrook's 72-hole Copperhead course. The verdant meadows of the Copperhead course sprawl to 7,340 yards and feature unusually dramatic elevation changes and reassuringly infrequent bear attacks. The tournament mixes the traditional drama of men dueling with clubs with a week of events such as the March 13 Think About Your Eyes Family Walk, which raises money for blindness prevention and lobbies to jazz up televised golf coverage with tie-dyed greens.
Though entertainment fads come and go, movie theaters remain, tempting audiences with fantastical stories new and old. The film buffs behind the Tampa Pitcher Show understand this craving for narrative connection, filling their movie hall and bar space’s calendar with first-run films, alternative events, and live music that helped them take home the prize for Best Kept Secret in Creative Loafing's Best of the Bay 2011 Reader’s Poll. Within the theater, projectors hum to life with current hits and cult classics every night; weekends welcome special happenings that include Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow-casts, art bazaars, and comedy shows. The Take 2 Lounge dispenses a sprawling menu of bar fare, including burgers, pizzas, and beers such as Magic Hat #9, Southern Tier, and Florida Avenue Ale flowing from 13 tap lines.
If there’s one team to emulate in professional sports, it’s the New York Yankees and their 27 championships. Since becoming the Class A-Advanced affiliate of the big league Yankees in 1994, the Tampa Yankees have grown into a minor league clone of their MLB brethren—they’ve won five Florida State League titles, including back-to-back years in 2009-10.
Further strengthening the Yankee bond, the T-Yanks play all their home games at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the Spring Training facility of the Bronx Bombers. A scaled-down replica of Yankee Stadium, Steinbrenner Field is an 11,000-seat facility brimming with Yankee lore. The 31-acre complex even has a Monument Park, which honors the organization’s greatest players and beer vendors.
