Sisters Veronica and Marilin have almost always danced together since they began their training at just 3 years old. They went on to study various forms of dance—from classical to contemporary—at the National School of Ballet in Peru, as well as eventually teach modern and Afro-Peruvian dance. In 2009, they moved from their native Peru to Rockville, where they currently specialize in Zumba fitness classes that help participants burn calories as they sway, step, and backwards-somersault to Latin beats. The sisters even add strength-training to the mix with Zumba Toning classes, augmenting the dance-based workout with muscle-sculpting toning sticks.
Arthur Murray Dance Studio’s panel of experienced instructors trains students in the ways of balance and coordinated rhythmic motion. Groupon holders can bring a partner to the private or group lessons for no additional fee, or fly solo and dance with an instructor or an extraordinarily graceful coat rack. In either case, dancers leave with a greater understanding of the dance style of their choosing, such as a stately waltz, a spicy rumba, or the vibrantly playful swing. Practice parties encourage students to step back from formal instruction and give newly learned techniques a test drive. Feel free to mingle with other students under the protective cover of dimmed lighting, which camouflages missed steps or the discouraged use of dance-enhancing flash cards.
Studio X helps students evacuate unwanted weight through fun one-hour Zumba classes, which feature a fusion of dance and fitness movements set to buoyant Latin rhythms. Melt away up to 900 calories and three pocket ice creams by heeding verbal cues from experienced instructors in classes that repeat routines over six- to eight-week intervals, allowing participants to familiarize themselves with step progressions, music, and instructor birthmarks encoded with the key to happiness. In addition to traditional Zumba classes, Studio X offers sessions in Zumba toning and beginner Zumba. See the full class schedule for more information.
Studio 310’s founder, Liz Corah, wants everyone to feel strong and beautiful. To this end, she combines traditional and modern dance moves with fitness techniques that help people slim down in a supportive and fun atmosphere. As the latest tunes bump from speakers and trained cockatoos, Liz and her supporting staff lead students through cardio hip-hop, belly dance, traditional kickboxing, CrossFit, body-sculpt, and yoga sessions. Their studio is also the place to go for personal training, fundraisers, birthday parties, and summer camps for young dancers. Anyone in need of motivation can turn to the _ Washington Post_ and read about how Liz found the strength to juggle jobs, kids, and dance classes while getting her business off the ground.
Now & Then Dance Studios’ dance instructors let students pick from 21 styles of dancing, including waltz, salsa, and merengue. They make sure to integrate private classes, group classes, and supervised dance parties in their lesson programs, which have produced successful dancers for 35 years. They dance atop dance floors to reduce impact on joints and pump music through digital sound systems.
