  • Tiger Rock Academy - Omaha
The history of the punch is only slightly longer than that of tae kwon do, a fighting art whose origin lies some 4,000 years into Korea?s past. Throughout millennia, tae kwon do evolved through the stewardship of many masters, whose personal touch created many branches of the martial art. Grand Master Won-kuk Lee developed the chung do kwan school, and from this bough of the tae kwon do tree sprouts the style taught at Tiger Rock Academy. The instructors splice the art?s ancient tenets with modern sports science to develop programs that implant athleticism, discipline, and self-confidence in students of all ages. Grappling and han mu do classes introduce the softer techniques of joint locks, takedowns, throws, and singing lullabies until an opponent falls sleep. Students condition their bodies for combat through exercise classes such as Kisado Interval Fitness training.

  • Aqua-Tots
In pools heated to a comfortable 90 degrees, Aqua-Tots' experienced instructors pass their aquatic knowledge on to younger generations. Before taking to the water, the team sorts prospective swimmers between the ages of 6 months and 12 years into one of eight swim levels along with similarly skilled and aged peers. Instructors work alongside the parents of infants and toddlers to practice water-safety skills and other swimming fundamentals such as blowing bubbles and singing whale songs. More advanced swimmers, meanwhile, master different strokes and techniques, and instructors incorporate more advanced concepts as their students progress through the levels. Parents can rest assured that their children are in good hands—each Aqua-Tots instructor has completed 32 hours in the company's Lessons for Life training program and a rigorous water-safety instructor exam. In addition to swimming lessons, Aqua-Tots offers a number of other programs, including an Adaptive Aquatics program that features water-therapy sessions designed for children with special needs. It also donates a portion of its proceeds to World Vision, a nonprofit organization that helps children and families worldwide gain access to such necessities as clean water, food, medical supplies, and education.

  • Curves
With machines set up in rows to encourage competition, many ordinary gyms cater to men's bodies and psychology, right down to the urinals that were "accidentally" installed in the women's locker room. At Curves, you'll move around a circuit of hydraulic-resistance machines that have been designed to work with women's bodies and promote weight loss, protect against osteoporosis, and deal with arthritis. An experienced trainer is always nearby to help manage your machine-maneuvering and your muscle-making. Instead of fiddling with weight stacks and losing your momentum, the hydraulic machines use your body weight and fitness level to create resistance that matches your abilities, decreasing the risk of soreness or injury. Because traditional lift-and-lower motions create bulky muscles, each machine uses push-and-pull motions to create toned, lean muscles perfect for crushing a grapefruit without looking like you can.
