Trent Meyer and Derek Bergman are committed members of the United Methodist Church, and sometimes choose to practice their faith through tree climbing, swimming, and laser tag. They direct the Methodist-run Camp Fontanelle, a year-round outdoor camp sprawled across more than 180 wooded acres of donated land. Both Trent and Derek draw from backgrounds as campers—and Trent from six years as a teacher—to lead summer camps for preschool through high-school students. They lead a team of camp counselors who coordinate harnessed-rope tree climbing, activities on low-ropes courses, archery lessons, and outdoor laser-tag matches.
They also draw visitors at different times of year with water slides, a 35'x65' jumping pillow and bounce houses, a petting barn filled with alpacas and goats, and pony rides. During the autumn-harvest season, they unveil the annual theme of a 10-acre corn maze filled with 5 miles of trails. A 3-acre pumpkin patch contains small and large carving pumpkins, gourds, mums, and Indian corn, which visitors can harvest and stuff into a large, horn-shaped wicker basket.
Carol Joy Holling Camp, helmed by Nebraska Lutheran Outdoor Ministries and accredited by the American Camp Association, opens up a natural wonderland to campers to carry out its mission of teaching people about Jesus. During programs for kids and families, campers take to the lake to angle for fish or paddleboat across the water. Three high-ropes courses challenge harness-strapped campers to face their fear of heights and low-flying satellites as they scamper across the course and zipline off a 25-foot cliff through the air. A typical day at the camp starts with camper-led worship and devotions before everyone scurries back to their cabins, platform tents, tepees, and bunkhouses.
The shifting seasons bring beauty and bounty to Ditmars Orchard and Vineyard, from the baby buds and bursting petals of spring to the branches heavy with peaches, apricots, cherries, and apples during summer and autumn. In 1994, the Ditmars family laid 300 trees into the ground as a family project, but slowly expanded their hobby into a full-time orchard, now cultivating almost 4,000 trees.
In the summer, fat juicy strawberries nestle in rows ready to be picked, and in fall, fields overflow with acres of bulbous orange pumpkins ready to become jack-o’-lanterns or a horseman’s fancy new hat. Amid fiery foliage and crisp autumn air, families adventure through the onsite corn maze and attend fun fall festivals that feature face painting and hayrides. Kids can clamber over tractor tires and whoosh down slides in the orchard’s large playground. Guests reenergize at the country kitchen, where lunch selections include apple cider, frozen fruit pies, and fresh-made chicken-salad sandwiches, as well as native Iowa wines available by the bottle or glass.
Retrofitted from former city buses, Nebraska Party Bus's six-vehicle fleet conveys revelers about town in limo-like luxury. The air-conditioned transports include a luxuriously upholstered 35-footer with a private party area in the rear, encouraging between-bar tête-à-têtes, whereas a pair of 42-seaters are perfect for ferrying wedding guests to receptions or back to central casting's rent-a-wedding-guest unit. The buses serve Omaha, Lincoln, and Council Bluffs, offering patrons comfortable conveyance throughout the metro area.
After a long stint in the Missouri Valley Conference, the Creighton University Bluejays will have a new home in 2013. Though the program is moving to the Big East Conference, its achievements in the MVC will live on. Creighton is the only school in conference history to top 200,000 fans in attendance for a season and the men's basketball team's reign of 15 consecutive postseason appearances, but the school's greatest sports moment may have come on the softball field. In an interview with White & Blue Review, Travis Sing—an alum and author of a book about the school's athletic past—gave his vote to softball player Kelly Brookhart for pitching a complete 31-inning game in 1991, followed by more than 20 innings in the second half of a double-header that went until 6 a.m. the following morning.
The athletics program's facilities are almost as much of a draw as the players. Built in 2011, the impressive TD Ameritrade Park Omaha houses the men's baseball team as well as the College World Series. Up to 24,000 fans can pack the park's trio of decks and bleacher seats, hemmed in by a spacious, 360-degree concourse and wormhole that transports fans to the 2114 College Galactic Series.
At K/B Stables, instructor Donna Stading-Smith imparts the equine wisdom she has been accruing since she first saddled up when she was 3 years old. As a former elementary media specialist and a 4-H teacher for 14 years, she’s experienced in making horseback riding a comfortable and fun activity for both beginners and more seasoned riders. Regular lessons and training prep students to take the reins for casual or competitive rides in English, western, or dressage styles. When they're not supporting budding equestrians, some 20 horses gallop across K/B Stables’ 11 acres. The family-run stable hosts 30 stalls for boarding accommodations by the night, week, month, or whatever period of time the horse’s former girlfriend said it needed to “sort things out.”
