Certified by the US Hang Gliding and Paragliding Association and drawing upon more than three decades of in-sky experience, master pilot and instructor Dan Guido teaches the basics of foot-launch hang-gliding to a new generation of enthusiasts. He puts SSusquehanna Flight Park’s five training hills and one mountain launch to good use by introducing fundamentals during beginning practice runs or demonstrating how to stop at eagle crossings during advanced soaring sessions. Lessons schemes range from single introductory sessions to the six-session Hang One program, which helps new fliers earn their USHPA Novice rating.
Respect for the road and proper training go hand in hand when it comes to riding motorcycles, even if it's just to the grocery store and back. This is where New York Safety Track comes in. The roughly two-mile track simulates real-life road conditions without distractions such as pedestrians and chickens debating the nature of free will so drivers can focus on honing their skills behind the wheel. Classes taught by professional instructors familiarize riders with their motorcycle as they learn to turn corners, pass other riders, and how to position their bodies during classroom lessons and on-track drills. Guests can also hone their skills over several days by bunking down in the on-site villa. The track also houses full-sized bathrooms with showers for rinsing away the road debris, rental motorcycles, and on-site meals for breakfast, lunch, or dinner.
Hidden in Oneonta lies a 3,000-square-foot slice of tropical paradise. Part conservatory, part herbarium, the Joseph L. Popp Jr. Butterfly Conservatory brings together plant and animal species from the world's warmer climates in beautiful displays for visitors to enjoy. While walking the carefully manicured pathways of the facility, guests encounter more than 32 different animal species, including reptiles, fish, and tropical birds. Numerous jellyfish and even a two-toed sloth call the conservatory home, which welcomes in every season.
