Royal Bartending School's convivial classes on mixology teach burgeoning barkeeps how to shake, stir, and blend drinks ranging from martinis to margaritas. In the four-hour crash course, aperitif apprentices learn to mix drinks and chic shots while mastering jargon for bar equipment and garnishes. Pupils seeking a master's in mixology enter into the 40-hour program, where amiable teachers use hands-on instruction to instill the knowledge of more than 21 liquor-focused subjects into eager noggins. After a bar set-up practice, mixology-theory lessons analyze the science behind mixed drinks, the essence of proper customer service, and the history of the shaken-versus-stirred martini war of ‘77. Leaving the course with 30 hours of practical mixing knowledge and mastery of drinks and shooters, graduates can wow friends and coworkers at holiday parties or the office. Novice blenders perfect their soda-gun technique with quick-draw competitions, and after changing out of their wet shirts, master blending liquors and sodas in speed drills.

Understanding that each child learns differently, the staff members of Sylvan Learning’s numerous centers design personalized programs. Based on the results of standardized testing, diagnostic tools, and one-on-one interviews, the staff works with students to help them firmly grasp basic skills such as reading, writing, math, and how to remember facts without tattooing them to their chests. Programs target students in kindergarten through grade 12 and mold to various learning styles, helping kids feel more comfortable in the classroom. Afterschool or summer classes can ready high-school students for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students wow college-admissions officers with their superior writing skills, exemplary test scores, and willingness to arm-wrestle the school mascot.

Founded and led by Dr. Sam Bakhtiar—a bodybuilding champion with both a master's and doctorate degree in fitness—Fitness Concepts houses an enthusiastic team of trainers dedicated to helping clients tone up within a 10,000-square-foot facility with rows of free weights and clusters of exercise machines. During specific programs, such as one-on-one personal-training sessions, they’ll help fit seekers target their personal goals, whether that’s strengthening their core, shaping up before a wedding, or conditioning for a sport.

Fitness Concepts' programs include dynamic boot-camp classes, which burn calories and strengthen bodies with ever-changing workouts and encouragement from invested trainers. Each facet of Fitness Concepts is designed to banish fat, break through fitness barriers, and help members feel more confident than Michael Jordan during his visit to Munchkin Land.

The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous centers understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of a skills assessment using diagnostic tools and one-on-one interviews.

Tutors work with students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. Camps and after-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.

On the site of the first school in Alta Loma, the Rancho Heritage School continues a tradition of educating local students that began nearly a century ago. Its programs offer curriculum-based learning for students from preschool through second grade. Kids study a full complement of math, science, language-arts, and physical-education courses in classes with no more than 15 students. During the summer, the school transforms into a camp, still retaining a strong focus on education. Weeklong themed camp sessions teach kids about forest creatures, the Olympics, and the local geography on a trip to Mt. Baldy Nature Center.

Aloha Mind Math Reading Writing helps kids aged 5–12 flex the sponginess of their brains by teaching them not only important concepts in math and reading and writing, but also inventive techniques for grappling with those important concepts. On the math side, the certified and well-trained tutors teach the abacus method to give first–fifth graders a strong foundation in mental math. The junior math program teaches 5- and 6-year-olds to understand numbers with multiple digits. Meanwhile, the senior math program graduates 12-year-olds with an ability to perform operations such as 914 x 325 in their heads, rather than by making a rectangle with a width of 914 action figures and a length of 325 action figures and then counting up all the action figures.

Alternatively, the reading and writing program helps children make sense of the world of letters. Ninety-minute lessons coupled with supplemental at-home work guide kids from understanding punctuation and parts of speech in first grade to learning about clauses and conjunctions in fifth grade, imparting a preparedness for middle-school language-arts classes. This part of the program also teaches them to read fiction and nonfiction, with such valuable concepts as inference, context, comparing and contrasting, and understanding that author’s view doesn’t have anything to do with J.K. Rowling’s penthouse vista. The reading and writing program also helps children cultivate their own writing skills, advancing them from simple descriptive sentences to persuasive, expository, and story writing at the fifth grade level.
