Q&A with Katie Wood, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

Pure Barre is a results-driven workout with clients seeing changes in their bodies in as few as 10 classes. Our team of highly trained and experienced teachers is dedicated to creating a warm and welcoming community of like-minded women who look forward to coming to class, not only for the fantastic workout, but to relieve stress, see their friends, and give themselves a little well-deserved "me-time." The physical and emotional benefits experienced at Pure Barre are what set us apart from other fitness techniques and keep clients coming back.

What's the most radical physical transformation you've seen a client make?

We had a client lose 16 inches in just one month. She noticeably melted away her hips, thighs, arms, and waist, and mentioned she was sleeping better and felt more energized during the day. She attended class 4?5 times a week and saw definition in her muscles she never thought possible. Her transformation was truly remarkable and inspiring, but the pride it gave her was priceless.

What is a typical session of your program or class like for a student?

For 55 minutes, your personal life will melt away as you plunge into this fun workout set to motivating music. Your teacher will set up the exercises and then circulate the room, correcting form to help you get the most out of your time in class. Jump right in with a high-energy warmup, followed by light weight work to sculpt and strengthen the arms. We transition to the ballet barre to tone the thighs and lift and shape the seat with small, precise movements. Targeted exercises define and flatten the abs, and we cool down with deep stretching to elongate the muscles.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

The Pure Barre technique has more than 12 years of science and research behind it and is constantly being refined and developed. Our teachers have been and continue to be trained and reviewed on a regular basis to ensure our clients get the very best workout possible. We believe that everyone is capable of rocking our classes?no dance experience required. As long as you can hold a ballet barre, you can do Pure Barre. That?s not to say that it?s easy, your first class will likely feel challenging at times, but we encourage you to stick with it. Try your hardest and let loose, and feel free to ask your instructor plenty of questions after class if you weren't clear on any of the moves. At Pure Barre, we believe that exercise should be fun.

Philip Faler is a naturopathic doctor because he likes people. He enjoys spending time with his patients, and he enjoys helping them feel their best with holistic approaches to health care. His approach has always been one of integrative or "whole-person" medicine. After spending six years as a family clinician, he shifted his focus to anti-aging therapies. Today, at Wholey Healing, Dr. Faler and his staff use hormone-replacement therapy, naturopathy, and bodywork techniques such as reiki to restore the spring back into patients' steps.

Mount Spokane Martial Arts prepares students for mental and physical challenges through tae kwon do and krav maga classes. Though both forms teach self-defense skills, tae kwon do does so through the lens of Korean martial arts and krav maga blends fitness with real-world situations.

The continually educated mouth specialists of Sunshine Dental keep smiles healthy with a tag team of preventative dentistry and modern technology. During the appointment, a licensed dentist scours the mouth for signs of decay, cavities, and lost gummy bears (a $97 value) with an attention to detail normally only exhibited by pickleball referees. X-rays, including four bitewings, an extraoral, and a panoramic (a $234 total value), allow the certified tooth whisperer to inspect cuisine crushers in greater depth in a set of black-and-white snapshots. Take-home whitening treatments evict the yellow from teeth with stain-fighting bleach and a sheriff-delivered court order. Mouths that return dutifully to the dental office every six months for a checkup receive additional treatments for free.

The black-belt instructors of Warhorse Karate Jiu Jitsu believe that developing character on the inside matters as much as learning to defend oneself on the outside. That?s why throughout their classes, they emphasize principles such as modesty, integrity, and perseverance to help pupils overcome the conflicts that can?t be resolved through traditional coup d??tat. For the times when those skills are needed, they prepare students by training them in in a mix of styles such as Kenpo karate and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Through progressive classes for kids as young as 6 through adults, instructors drill participants in both unarmed and armed self-defense. For those interested in developing defense skills for the ground, they teach Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This focused approach, along with its sponsorship of charitable organizations such as the Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, has won the academy many accolades. Warhorse Karate Jiu Jitsu has won Krem?s The Best of Spokane contest in 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 in addition to taking the top spot in the Inlander Best of the Inland NW awards.
