Ladies Workout Asheville's supportive, attentive staff help women navigate the facility's full exercise circuit, packed schedule of workout classes, and other body-bettering amenities such as tanning beds and nutrition counseling. At Viva Z Club, Z stands for Zumba. The dance fitness class that pairs easy-to-follow moves with Latin rhythms feels more like a night out on the town than a workout, like doing squats in a strobe-lit room. That's because it encourages students to sway, shimmy, and jump to catchy music as they also burn calories and tighten core muscles. And although Viva Z Club's main focus is Zumba, it's not the only class type offered. Barre-Lates blends a ballet barre workout with Pilates to strengthen and tone, and Nia creates a medley of martial arts, dance, and yoga for a gentle but effective workout.
Sifu Ron LePree helps students of all levels learn to defend themselves with the Chinese martial art of wing chun kung fu. He trained in the United States, Germany, and Hong Kong, studying under the son of Grandmaster Ip Man—a notable wing chun instructor who taught Bruce Lee—as well as other experts in the field. In his classes, LePree teaches the fundamental tenets and moves of wing chun kung fu. He believes that a strong foundation is vital and builds on that structure during each class, introducing students to drills and interactions with an emphasis on mindfulness and concentration.
Wailing away on person-sized punching bags, glove-wearing kick-boxers sweat and focus. Instructors weave between this forest of flying fists and furrowed brows, guiding boxers with technical feedback and a creative take onsport. Kickboxing in a group setting, say trainers, "encourages participants to push themselves by working harder." The result of this hard work is toned muscles, increased confidence, and a background in self-defense, along with pet punching bag that follows its exerciser home.
Inside Boone Studio, exercisers follow the lead of energetic instructors as they bend, bob, and stretch their way to stronger, more flexible physiques. During barre workouts, participants alternate exercises that build long, lean muscles with the help of body weight, weighted gloves, and resistance bands. These workouts can also take place in a room heated to 85 degrees, which helps loosen muscles, flush systems, and improve the deep isometrics and contractions of each session. The ballet barre also plays an important role in many of Boone’s other classes, helping yoga and Pilates students emphasize alignment as they bend, breathe, and grind their skateboards.
