Cheerleading is competitive. Sometimes it's even more competitive than the sport the cheerleaders are cheerleading for. But above all else, cheerleading is an exuberant experience that stresses teamwork, since there is no "I" in pyramid. For aspiring tumblers, twirlers, and acrobats, The RockStarz LLC cheerleading school trains young dancers, and even their parents, in the art of boosting spirits. Head coach and lifetime cheerleader Onea Davis brings her decades of squad experience to the lessons, while instructors Nikkia Tyrie Neal and Natalia Davis use their pedigrees in modern dance and Zumba to keep the RockStarz fit and agile as they master routines.
Jackie Collier-Thomas, the owner of Fitness With A Beat, has been a group exercise instructor for many years, experience that she now brings to Zumba classes for exercisers of all abilities. A licensed member of the Zumba Instructor Network, Jackie specializes in regular Zumba and Zumba Toning classes, which use Zumba Toning sticks and enhanced rhythms to help sculpt and tone the body. Jackie also conducts Zumba Gold and Zumba Gold Toning classes that specialize in moves for active older or deconditioned participants.
At Viva Z Club, Z stands for Zumba. The dance fitness class that pairs easy-to-follow moves with Latin rhythms feels more like a night out on the town than a workout, like doing squats in a strobe-lit room. That's because it encourages students to sway, shimmy, and jump to catchy music as they also burn calories and tighten core muscles. And although Viva Z Club's main focus is Zumba, it's not the only class type offered. Barre-Lates blends a ballet barre workout with Pilates to strengthen and tone, and Nia creates a medley of martial arts, dance, and yoga for a gentle but effective workout.
Wailing away on person-sized punching bags, glove-wearing kick-boxers sweat and focus. Instructors weave between this forest of flying fists and furrowed brows, guiding boxers with technical feedback and a creative take onsport. Kickboxing in a group setting, say trainers, "encourages participants to push themselves by working harder." The result of this hard work is toned muscles, increased confidence, and a background in self-defense, along with pet punching bag that follows its exerciser home.
"You chart your fitness course. We'll be the compass." That's how the team at Fit X think of their roles in clients' fitness journeys. Group classes abound, manned by teachers who guide Pilates and Zumba workouts. But with an arsenal of exercise equipment available to them, Fit X gymgoers are just as likely to devise their own workout regimens. Whether enjoying a supportive group environment or jogging on a treadmill in blissful solitude, clients retain control over their own experiences.
