The Orange County Ronald McDonald House provides low-cost, comfortable lodging for families with seriously ill children who are receiving medical care in Orange County hospitals. Each family staying at the house has a private room and bath, and can access shared areas including a fully stocked kitchen, laundry room, and lounge areas. Although the actual cost for a family to stay for one night is approximately $150, families are asked to pay $10 per day—though no one is turned away due to an inability to pay. Housing costs are largely funded by donations.
Showtime Championship Boxing raises waves of adrenaline-soaked applause with a pair of championship bouts starring fleet-footed bantamweights. In the main event, a rematch of this summer’s controversial title fight in Las Vegas, audiences roar at the thuds of lightning-fast jabs as unbeaten Abner Mares defends his IBF and WBC silver-bantamweight championship titles against ex-champ Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko. Palpable animosity stirs between the two camps as they square off for the second time. In their first meeting, hearty portions of upper cuts and roundhouses brutalized the sluggers until the 11th round, when the referee called a knockout following a low blow about the color coordination of Agbeko’s trunk-and-robe ensemble.
At each of several one-day festivals held throughout the country, thousands of revelers unite in an epic clash of pulp, beer, and live music. Armed with a cache of 300,000 tomatoes, participants don protective bathing suits and goggles and hurl the fruit at one another during a two-hour battle. Throughout the afternoon, live music and costume contests offer an entertaining respite from the front lines, as bartenders dispense drafts of beer to attendees older than 21, refueling soldiers' morale before they resign to writing goodbye letters to their produce vendors back home. All tomatoes used during the event are past ripe and already fated for disposal, making the battle an efficient means of tossing them before their cursed transformation into singing Muppets.
More than a thousand years have passed since healers learned that illnesses could be cured through stimulation of certain body parts. A wide array of frameworks developed for how best that healing should be brought about. Licensed acupuncturist Winston Wang has taken components of these frameworks to craft his own: understand the patient's condition, set up a treatment plan, and test it. At Orange Acupuncture, clients can seek Winston's techniques to treat maladies ranging from depression and insomnia to seasonal allergies.
George Moore is the third-generation owner of a family business that opened more than 60 years ago. True to its original purpose, the shop still sells sewing machines, cabinets, vacuum cleaners, and ceiling fans, but now aims to acquire equipment that is eco-friendly and ultra-efficient.
Alongside its retail branch, Moore’s nurses the machines it sells back to health and leads crafting classes. Expert stitchers lead hands-on sessions in everything from quilting to correctly taking the measurements of a restless scarecrow.
