Old-growth douglas firs, wetlands, and 43 bunkers populate Stone Creek Golf Club's award-winning, par 72 layout designed by Peter Jacobsen and Jim Hardy. The 165-acre course’s front nine holes are straighter laced, and the back nine’s tree-lined fairways of fescue grass challenge swingers with elevation changes and distractingly beautiful views of Mount Hood, the same "Hood" made popular in mainstream rap music. Players can hone their aim at the hitting stations of extensive practice greens, which include a full swing area with target greens at a variety of distances, before returning to face hole nine's six sand traps.
After sending dozens of dimpled balls soaring through the air, golfers can pop in at the Stone Creek Deli for a hot dog and foamy swigs of beer. Links magazine named Stone Creek Golf Club a Top 10 Green Course for using pesticides sparingly and only irrigating stretches of grass currently in use, inviting ground-nesting birds to build their two-story colonial mansions in the fallow areas.

Housed at the bottom of the roaring Willamette Falls, which comprises the confluence of Willamette and Clackamas Rivers, eNRG Kayaking's on-water shop and docks serve as the home base for instructional excursions in kayaking, rapids rafting, and standup paddleboarding. Head instructor Sam Drevo also helps those more experienced in watersports to attain a swift-water rescue certification or an ACA instructor certification, required credentials to shake hands with most river deities. Sam watches over all levels of kayakers with experience earned through years of competing, including a ranking as the world's sixth-best freestyle kayaker in 1998 and a first-place win at the Ford Gorge Games' Outdoor World Championships in 2001.
When Sam is not leading tours around the falls or down segments of either river, he guides extended expeditions to other northwestern and foreign waterways. His 16 international aquatic excursions have taken paddlers to rivers on four continents, through countries such as Canada, Costa Rica, Thailand, Laos, China, India, and Botswana. Sam and his staff aim to protect the rivers through eco-friendly exploration and sell a range of kayak models to help others to similarly respect the ecosystem or sneak up and tickle unsuspecting bass.
In 2003, after years spent headlining Portland ballets such as Don Quixote and The Nutcracker, Keith Walls moved to New York City. He continued balletic journey by training under renowned teachers from the Kirov and the Bolshoi, Russia’s most renowned ballet companies besides the Funky Chicken Institute. Outside the studio, Keith flexed his dancing and acting muscles in musicals such as Grease and Once Upon a Mattress.
It’s this well of experience that Keith draws from throughout his recreational and intensive classes at Abernethy Performing Arts Academy. Starting with creative-movement classes for youngsters, Keith instructs his students in the fundamentals of ballet and prepares them for its advanced techniques. In other beginner-oriented dance classes, he teaches the basic steps to styles such as jazz, hip-hop, Irish, and tap. Like his ballet classes, musical-theater courses run from beginner to advanced levels. Both give students opportunities to perform in productions such as an annual Halloween show and classical ballets.
Growing up on a farm granted Ryan and Shane Stonemetz a firsthand look at the injustices of the industrial-food market. The brothers watched their father and grandfather toil daily to make ends meet and subsequently swore off entering the family business. The expanding staff transports ProFarm's bounty to 20 area farmers' markets and various wholesale clients. ProFarm also participates in a CSA program that provides weekly boxes of fresh, local produce to participants in surrounding communities.
In her private chamber within Heidi's, Nicole Cereghino is cataloging all of the ingredients found in beauty products that clog pores. The list is long and full of surprises such as algae extract, cocoa butter, and spackle, but Cereghino has devoted her business, Pure Radiance Revealed, to restoring skin's healthy glow without them. Instead, she relies on fruit enzymes and natural acids to gently buff away dead and damaged tissue during her six specialty facials. Particle-free diamond microdermabrasion furthers this goal with minimal irritation to the skin, and soft, LED light and microcurrent technology promote cellular renewal below the surface for a firmer, more youthful complexion. To help showcase the radiant complexions that result from her treatments, she also removes unwanted hair with the targeted rays of an Elos laser instead of staring at the hair long enough to make follicles get uncomfortable and leave.
In a profile for Oregon Live, Matt Perry said he got the idea to open a coffee shop in 2010, shortly after returning from service in Iraq with the Oregon Army National Guard. He was taking a community-college business course and had to make the plans for a shop as an assignment. Two years later, he was able to realize his plans with the cozy two-story business named after his english mastiff.
Toasty aromas of Portland Roasting Coffee's beans waft through the shop as baristas fill mugs and steam silky lattes. Several healthy drinks provide an alternate jolt of nutrition, from berry smoothies enhanced with flax or multivitamins to green juices, such as the Army Greens with a blend of kale, spinach, ginger, and patriotic speeches.
