Tara Colavecchio, the owner of Dragonfly Hair Studio, has a star-studded resume that including tending to the locks of Claudia Schiffer, Rosie O’Donnell, Sigourney Weaver, and Cindy Crawford. Inside her salon, she shepherds a staff wielding scissors and bowls of hair dye as they revamp clients from the neck up. They also work strands into eye-catching updo’s for weddings and straighten locks using a formaldehyde-free formula.
Having made his way from the sandy beaches of Brazil to the urban jungle of New York more than 15 years ago, hairstylist Paulo Gregorio has worked his way through the beauty world to become a master colorist. He's also worked for L’Oreal International and continued to grow his clientele through a number of stints at upscale salons. Eventually, his hairstyling experience led him to found Paulo’s Atelier, a beauty haven that was not only crowned Best of Westchester 2008 by Westchester Magazine, but also earned the magazine’s Editor’s Pick for Best Colorist 2008. Now, Gregorio resides over a staff of more than 20 stylists, nail technicians and makeup artists at his European-inspired salon, which is marked by contemporary shapes and pops of bold colors.
Each beautician lives up to the latter half of the salon’s name (an atelier is an artist’s workshop) as they practice their craft on men, women, and children. A Baliage hair coloring treatment subtly lightens locks, and four types of straightening treatments, such as Brazilian blowouts and thermal Japanese straightening, chase frizz from follicles. Manicures and pedicures also refresh clients by covering nails with a chip-free UV gel, elegant silk wraps, or acrylic tips that can withstand the stress of scratching a pickup truck's back.
BHC Salon & Spa owner Franco Marino picked up his first pair of scissors inside his father's barbershop in Italy more than 30 years ago. Today, the master stylist still keeps himself on the "cutting edge of hair design and education," according to Westchester Magazine, with a specialty in subtle, natural-looking color. Besides tinting and trimming inside BHC, Franco has also displayed his skills as a platform artist at CosmoProf in Italy and several International Beauty Shows. Inside his white-walled home base, Franco is backed up by his equally talented staff, which includes a senior stylist with 20 years of experience. And though his rising-star junior stylists are only a few years out of beauty school, they've all received direct training from him, honing skills that inspired Westchester Magazine to name the salon the area's Best Bargain Haircut in 2010.
Water gathers into rivulets as it trickles down the glass fountain inside Indulgence Blow Dry Lounge. These thin, smooth streams bear an uncanny resemblance to the frizz-less strands that cascade down clients’ scalps after a brush-out and blow-dry from Dianna Ettari and her team of stylists. As the stylists color locks or bolster length with SoCap human hair extensions, they periodically reference a row of full-length, backlit mirrors that reflect an interior decorated with swirling beige filigrees and vases overflowing with flowers. The salon’s menu of services also includes highlights and deep-conditioning and keratin-smoothing treatments that tame strands recently used to fish pennies out of electrical sockets.
