Evolve Paleo Chef aims to recreate the human diet before the age of agriculture and civilization, crafting nourishing meals of smoked fish, grilled chicken, and steaks that satisfy primal hunger pangs. The kitchen's paleo (short for paleolithic) diet fuels the body with the same nourishment that was available to our distant hunter-gatherer ancestors?little to no sugar, no dairy, no gluten, plenty of meat, and the fear of sabertooth tigers. Chefs design delicious meals and snacks around these core nutrients, which can be picked up or delivered directly to your doorstep every week. Each meaty meal is made with products from local companies such as Dodge City Beef, a rancher-owned producer of pork and beef, or Campo Lindo Farms, a source for flavorful, pasture-raised poultry.

Harley, the founder of Strawberry Hill Povitica Company, began baking povitica bread in 1984 using his mother's traditional Slavic recipe. He passed away in 1999, but his children and dedicated bakers continue to prepare the dense, sweet bread following his mother's technique. They roll dough into paper-thin layers, pile on ingredients such as nuts and honey, and roll the layers into loaves that weigh 2.5 pounds each after they're baked. Patrons can choose from Kosher-certified flavors such as english walnut, cokolada, or chocolate-chip cream cheese. The bread can be enjoyed in a variety of ways: toasted and buttered, crowned with a scoop of ice cream, or sandwiched around a whole roasted turkey.

One nippy Tuesday morning, Oliver H. Gerry swung open a set of doors inside the Grand Avenue Temple in downtown Kansas City. It was January 23, 1912, and that unfurled entranceway symbolized the first day Gerry Optical was open for business. In the 100 years since, professionally trained technicians have prepared eyewear to complement the styles of countless clients, including President Harry Truman and Senator Nancy Kassebaum. Today, each of the store's nine locations carries between 800 and 1,200 frames from brands such as Calvin Klein, Ray-Ban, Prada, and BCBG, and the flagship store on 75th Street also houses its own grinding lab to quickly custom-craft lenses and fix cracks after cartoon eye-popping mishaps. To honor its deep community roots, Gerry Optical gives back by partnering with Lions Clubs International to provide discount eye exams and eyeglasses to underprivileged families.

No less than 5,000 square feet of climbable surface stares down at visitors to Monster Mountain. The name is certainly fitting, as the indoor rock wall is billed as the largest in all of Kansas City?a place not otherwise known for its mountains. Situated inside the larger fitness and entertainment complex of Emerald City, the massive expanse poses a fun challenge to both beginners and advanced climbers, as well as their pet goats. But Emerald City isn't just about climbing and belaying. In fact, the center features numerous ways for people of all ages to get active and have a blast. A play area for kids ages 4?12, for example, contains in-ground trampolines, foam pits, and even its own miniature rock wall. Parents can also enroll kids in gymnastics classes that range from casual to competition-level.
