At Aravon Salon & Spa, a staff of smooth relaxation experts doles out massages, facials, manicures, and more. Let worries and cares hit the road as a licensed massage therapist kneads knots and rubs aching muscles until they surrender to their 10-fingered masters. The massage therapist will also pamper pores through herbal steaming therapy, which includes aromatic botanicals that hang heavy in the misty air, decontaminating the dermis and invigorating the senses.

The Great Clips empire spans more than 3,000 salons across North America, where a collective of over 30,000 stylists wait, ready to tend to hairstyles. At these salons, no appointments are necessary—though an online check-in system aids those who wish to skip any potential lines by adding their names directly to the haircut queue. And to aid their new hairstyles, customers can peruse a line of gels, conditioners, pomades, and tea-tree oil shampoos and body washes.

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

In July 2012, I started school for aesthetics and I realized when I got my first job how much I could impact a woman's self-image and self-esteem just through something as simple as an eyebrow wax. It's very empowering to me to be able to share my tricks and advice during waxing or facials to make women see that they can feel beautiful every day.

Do you offer your customers any extra perks?

Complimentary coffee, tea, and water. With an eyebrow wax, I fill and highlight brows for no extra charge. With eyelash extensions I seal the lashes for free.

What steps do you take to make your clients feel at ease?

I provide a clean environment. None of my cleaning supplies are in a back room or storage closet. I always make sure my aesthetics room smells great and that pillows and a warm blanket are provided for longer treatments. My door is frosted glass as well, and a lot of clients have expressed that they are thankful for the privacy.

Boston Avenue Salon owner Pamela Fodor uses chemistry and science every day, but after 21 years as a professional cosmetologist and 4 years as a teacher, she has turned science into an art. “If I could do one service all day, every day, it would be women’s cuts and highlighting services. I take pride in hitting the baby-blonde lites every time with no toner,” she says. She honed her skills treating the hair of more than 200 brides and thousands more prom-goers. One client even flew Pamela out to Hawaii to ensure she was on-hand to style hair on the wedding day.

Pamela pairs her services with those of her staff, who invite clients to sip on complimentary coffee, tea, water, beer, or wine while enjoying a bit of well-earned beautifying and pampering. The decor echoes the duo’s classic sense of style with a combination of black and white elements accented by glass furnishings. The walls sport images of equally classic beauty, such as Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley, and the Rat Pack, a bunch of rats who accidentally tied themselves together by the tail and wound up resembling Cary Grant’s profile.

A PCA-certified clinician, she's passionate about sharing her depth of knowledge with her clients?starting with a 20-minute consultation before commencing any treatments. "Ninety percent of aging is preventable," she says. "I really focus on educating people about what is possible with their skin." Though some treatments are on par with those offered in medical offices, Penny pampers skin within private rooms, maintaining a comfortable and relaxed spa ambiance. Away from the bustle and buzz of the salon, she welcomes clients to rest on pillow-top spa beds in rooms lit by soft lighting. Here, she works to reveal radiant skin with medical-grade microdermabrasions or PCA Skin peels. She also offers lash and brow tinting, full-body waxing, and spa facials using Arbonne's European skincare line.
