Counselors Andrea Doffoney Anyanwu and Namrita Chawla know the stresses that today's students are under when applying to college. So Andrea founded College Counselor Concierge with the belief that the college admissions process should be "a fun period of self-discovery." Armed with years of experience in the academic world and masters degrees in public policy, the application experts work hand-in-hand with undergraduates, graduates, international students, and aspiring MBAs. They help the prospective scholars choose the perfect institution for their needs, goals, and team mascot preferences, as well as craft the best applications possible. Counselors meet over-the-phone or in-person with clients as part of many of the customized consultation packages, helping to arrange visits to college campuses, prepare for necessary standardized tests, and plan for early application when necessary.
A figure sits, slightly curved, its exposed spine revealing the deep red roses that have sprouted from its backbone. Another figure gazes serenely down at the trio of multihued fish emerging from its rib cage. These aren't subjects in an artsy science-fiction film—these are sculptures from the mind and hands of Natasha Dikareva.
The visionary artist blends her imagination, ancient Greek mythology, and Eastern spiritual philosophies to invent darkly whimsical creations that challenge onlookers' relationships to reality. And she doesn't just keep her talents to herself—she helms hands-on workshops to teach others how to tap into their imaginations, whether they want to sculpt a simple teapot or form a mask to wear while picking their kids up from school.
The instructors at Future Light Digital Workshops introduce small groups of up to 12 budding photographers to the world of digital photo manipulation. After receiving individualized instruction from snapshot sensei, students snap a few photos inside the classroom to master their camera’s basic controls. Then, at the sound of an old-timey foghorn, shutterbugs-in-training rush outside to capture images of colorful murals and other sights in the Mission. After the sojourn has yielded an adequate supply of photos, each patron sits down at one of a dozen onsite computers to edit raw snapshots into artistic creations and highbrow cat-image macros.
An official American Heart Association CPR training center, Safety Training Seminars has provided first-aid education in life-saving courses since 1989. Although the center's American Heart Association instructors possess extensive life-saving skills, they still know how to present their material for the general public. Despite the urgent nature of the techniques they teach, they manage to create a low-stress and casual environment. Catering to those with busy schedules, classes are scheduled year-round across the Bay Area, with many times and locations available.
For more than two decades, the husband-and-wife team behind Jane’s Roses, Flowers and Events has equipped patrons with decorative arrangements for wedding days, formal occasions, and everyday happenings. The two weave together elegant blooms with complementary leaves, ferns, and wispy foliage, crafting beautiful bouquets and artfully filled vases for loved ones. They also design custom arrangements for special occasions, bedecking halls with freshly plucked blossoms laid into aisle-lining strands or arranged into stylish centerpieces.
Should flowers not suit someone’s tastes, the shop loads fruit, snacks, and chocolate into homey wicker gift baskets, which can be picked up or delivered straight to recipients’ doors. Each delivery comes with additional add-ons such as mylar balloons, Ferrero Rocher chocolates, and a photo confirmation, which lets senders experience first-hand the surprise, joy, or leftover milk mustaches on recipients’ faces.
