Q&A with Larkin, General Manager
Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?
We keep our members motivated by constantly coaching and encouraging them.
Do you believe in the maxim, "No pain, no gain?? Why or why not?
No, pain is not always to answer to reaching your goal. Consistency gets better results with fewer injuries.
With professional experience in jazz, ballet, and modern dance, Jacqueline Valdez could have gone off to audition for Broadway musicals. Instead, she pursued pole dancing. Backed by accolades that include a finals appearance at the PSO Southeast aerial art competition, a Gold medal dramatic SL3 division winner, and as a creator of the ballet-infused Infusion Remax and Vertical Arabesque classes, Jacqueline now shares her passion for pole dancing?as well as Pilates, burlesque, and other forms of dance-based fitness?at her all-women's dance and fitness studio, Elegant Body Pilates with Jacqueline Valdez.
Understanding that dance and fitness are as much about gaining self-esteem as losing weight, Jacqueline maintains small class sizes so that she can give clients personal attention and maintain a safe, supportive atmosphere. She even offers online classes that clients can participate in from home. In addition to classes and workshops, Jacqueline organizes pole-dancing and burlesque parties designed for all manner of celebrations, from bachelorette parties to Supreme Court swearing-ins.
Laurie Scott-Reyes has bounced around for most of her life. She was born in Germany, grew up in Alabama, and graduated high school in Indiana. She even spent more than two decades with the US Army as a photojournalist. Today, Laurie continues to bounce around—as a writer, as an artist, and as a fitness instructor during Loca-Motion Dance4Fitness classes. During her classes, Laurie leads groups through high-energy workouts set to the beat of handpicked songs from around the globe. She carefully plans and executes each routine, ensuring every muscle in the body gets a workout.
Mary Hencher and her team of certified instructors lead Dance Trance classes that set high-energy dance moves to upbeat music. Because the classes emphasize the energy of the music, instructors don’t shout out commands; instead, they use a series of hand gestures and intuitive, easy-to-follow dance moves to guide students through the classes.
With his forays into acting and politics, many people forget that Arnold Schwarzenegger was once a professional body builder and former Mr. Universe. Arnold Kolozsvari didn't forget?it was Schwarzenegger's superhero-like physique that influenced him to join the world of fitness training in the first place. Born in Hungary, Kolozsvari competed in the body-building sphere in Romania, armed with nothing but the diligence, drive, and metallic Skynet endoskeleton he borrowed from his idol Schwarzenegger. Fueled by a desire to train others, he eventually made his way to the United States, where he teamed up with the Revive?s other half, Danny Legault, a 13-year hockey veteran who devoted seven years of service to the United States Marine Corps. The duo joined forces and opened up their own fitness center, where they?ve since trained a client base that includes the Bethune-Cookman University baseball team and numerous Miss Florida and Miss America pageant contestants.
Kolozsvari and Legault happily adapt the functional movements in their boot camps and group cardio classes to suit students of any skill level, age, or physical ability, welcoming anyone ranging from teen athletes to senior citizens. To offer a rounded approach to physical fitness and overall well-being, they can also supplement group workouts with nutritional plans and one-on-one personal-training sessions.
Brick City Health & Fitness combines exercise with pampering. Personal trainers supervise clients as they pull weighted cables, curl free weights, and work out on machines. For those interested in group training, multiple fitness studios host Zumba, Pilates, and functional fitness classes. But post-workout, the pampering begins. A heated whirlpool and a red-cedar dry sauna help clients relax, and an onsite full-service salon with facials and massages furthers the spa-like experience.
