Simply knowing how to land a kick or a punch is one thing. Having the discipline to use those skills effectively in a real-life scenario is another thing altogether. The instructors at 1 ATA Martial Arts draw on years of training to teach children, teens, and adults the complete meaning of martial arts such as tae kwon do and kickboxing. As one might expect, the classes emphasize physical training in a safe environment, but they leave room to focus on mental growth as well.
Mixed martial arts are brought to pupils in diverse forms at 300 MMA Fitness. Boxing, kickboxing, and tae kwon do heighten adrenaline. But women’s self-defense focuses on arming practitioners against attackers as much as sculpting bodies. The gym also holds camps for ages 4–6 and 7–15 and classes for the whole family.
The muted thud of a 16-ounce boxing glove connecting with a 150-pound punching bag signals the start of class at LA Boxing. Its boxing, kickboxing, and mixed-martial-arts classes not only breed expert fighters, they also burn calories at a dizzying rate (up to 1,000 per hour). By incorporating a workout regime into each class, boxers cross-train in a way that arms them against attacks as it boosts their level of fitness.
Chris Sutton’s vast knowledge of self-defense and fitness stems from his extensive martial arts training, as well as a law enforcement career that pitted him against ruthless criminals. At two locations, Chris and his fellow instructors teach students how to combat both attackers and stale fitness routines, including with C.O.B.R.A., a 10-week reality self-defense course designed by Chris. They also offer classes in kickboxing, mixed martial arts, and after-school karate for kids.
