Step N Dance founder Tony Duarte began dancing as a child in Nicaragua. Soon after moving to Miami at age 16, he developed an interest in styles ranging from the waltz to the hustle. With the new discovery of so many new steps came a passionate love of one particular style, however, and Duarte soon mastered the art of salsa. Over his career, Duarte’s skills have been seen on PBS, Univision, and every time he crosses the street. Classes at his own studio lean strongly towards salsa and other Latin styles, each enlivened with a smattering of jazz, hip-hop, and Afro-Cuban influences.
The only exit from Leapin' Lizards' treehouse is down a slide, but those leaving fall only to a cushioned pile of stuffed jungle animals. Across the facility's indoor playgrounds, kids bounce on inflatable obstacles and test Newton's laws of motion on a tire swing. Other entertainment takes place in the music room, where they don costumes and belt out melodies or play musical instruments. A separate playroom for toddlers and infants displays walls hand-painted by a local artist to resemble a peaceful aquarium or terrifying dining room. Nearby, parents lounge at the café with a cup of coffee and access to free WiFi. They can also participate with their kids in the center's music and movement classes.
A miniature clay-racing track is the centerpiece of Basher’s RC Raceway, facilitating races for hobbyists, competitive drivers, and partygoers. The indoor facility’s simulated terrain allows racers to maintain command over their remote-control-operated mini vehicles to stay competitive regardless of inclement weather or impending asteroid impacts. The experts at Basher’s RC Raceway frequently host summer camps to teach young hobbyists the basics of RC-car handling, and they also rent out the facility for birthdays with organized races, food in private party rooms, and press conferences with the tiny drivers in each car.
After teaching foreign languages and working as a sales rep, Alice Abrams realized that the biggest constant in her life—exercise—should be her next career move. Her 16 years of Pilates training prompted her to open Pilates of Boynton Beach, where she mans classes alongside her daughter, Elyssa Zion, and a squad of certified instructors. The curriculum shapes lean bodies with a variety of stretching and dance techniques. Mat and equipment Pilates work alongside Xtend Barre lessons to stretch muscles while improving posture, and Zumba classes incorporate festive music to fuel cardio choreography. All sessions, whether group or private, are meant to accommodate students of any skill level so long as they bring a permission slip signed by each vertebra.
Named in honor of golf-course designer Bruce Borland, who died in a plane accident in 1999, the Borland Center swings open its doors to the community by focusing on family values. Concerts, plays, and recitals are just a few of the events that coax guests into the venue's 10,000 square feet of space, which harbors a 500-seat theater and a multipurpose ballroom that doubles as an indoor practice field for local cribbage teams on rainy days.
