Merge the oil of the body and the water of the mind through the alignment focus of Hatha flow, or prepare yourself for motherhood with a pre-natal yoga-therapy class. As a community, Green Monkey is thriving. Across its three locations, it's taken on dozens of instructors who lead more than 36 types of classes. As with Richard Nixon's five-octave singing voice, the classes' range is striking. Meditation classes rely on breathing techniques and silent affirmations to quiet the mind, whereas Rockin’ Power Vinyasa classes use energetic music and intense movements to invigorate the body. As if all those class varieties weren't enough, the instructors also put together frequent workshops, many of which teach specific skills such as handstands and inverted backbends.
The thermostat at Awaken Yoga pumps out the heat, sending out waves of warmth to melt tension and toxins. In the balmy climate, Awaken Yoga instructors lead classes designed to burn fat, dilate capillaries, boost metabolism, and soothe muscular tension for a greater range of motion. They introduce fundamental flows in warm yoga and a challenging blend of sun salutations and choreography during hot Vinyasa classes, as well as lead a slew of other sessions designed for everyone from beginners to seasoned yogis. Early-morning Rise & Flow classes get students geared up for daily activities such as lifting boxes, sitting at a desk, or filling in for a Picasso sculpture at the local museum.
Synergy Yoga holds small gatherings of passionate yogis as they stretch and build muscles in 1 of the 50 classes offered each week. Various styles of yoga, including traditional Hatha flow, focus on deep breathing, and more rigorous classes, such as hot core Vinyasa or hot power yoga, combine the sweat-inducing powers of a heated studio with moves that can makes tummies tighter than an elf's shoes on a pro basketball player.
A wrought-iron gate opens into an alley wall lined with bright verdant foliage and skinny trees. This greenery snakes onto a stone path, which leads to Synergy Yoga’s curved red doors. The first thing that hits visitors inside the yoga sanctuary is the color: mustard-yellow and two-tone green walls, red accents up the stairs, and crisp white moulding. The main studio swims with light filtered in from high windows set in the towering two-story ceilings, light that bounces off the white walls and cascades down to the wood flooring.
Focused on supporting the community, Synergy Yoga aims to include all walks of life. Kids' yoga invites youngsters to develop their flexibility, and very advanced yogis can turn their passion into a living with teacher training. Healing arts such as psychic medium reading, meditation, or massage soothe guests in need of some extra care.
As a marathon runner, distance swimmer, and certified spinning instructor, Rachel Bash is known for her boundless energy. At Hot Salutations, she channels this energy into motivating both a staff of experienced instructors and students of all abilities. Together, she and her instructors strive to help students get in shape and leave the outside world behind during hot-Vinyasa classes. In each studio, heating panels and humidifiers keep the room between 91 and 95 degrees with roughly 50% humidity to deepen lunges, detoxify the body, and stretch muscles left tense by spending too much time cramped up in a body.
Founder and lead instructor Jamar has spent more than 25 years empowering students to take control of their lives by sharing his own inner journey through yoga. A certified Kripalu yoga instructor and meditation teacher, Jamar infuses each session of focused breathing and movement with his dedication for seeking the Higher Self. The yoga studio's dark wood flooring, green earth tones, and tranquil lighting cultivate a relaxing environment where students peacefully work their way through the Hatha-style poses paired with meditation and inner reflection, striving to calm the mind's constant nagging about remembering to breathe. The studio hosts more than 30 classes and workshops each month— including Zumba, belly dance, hoop, and tai chi, in addition to yoga—as well as regular presentations from guest speakers. Just beyond the meditation floor lies a metaphysical gallery of books, jewelry, healing stones, and crystals to supplement students' practice.
