For instructor and founder Luis Colon, it all starts with three little words: Yes, I can. The third-degree black belt and head instructor at United Martial Arts School preaches a positive attitude as he uses tae kwon do and jujitsu to build self-confidence in his students. Instructors teach self-defense classes for women, mixed-martial-arts classes for adults and teens, and punishing muay thai strikes during private kickboxing classes.
Tee off at one of two nine-hole golf courses maintained by the Miami-Dade County Park & Recreation Department. Whether chipping onto the green at Greynolds or dodging water hazards and hazardous water monsters at Briar Bay, golfers of all experience levels can play quick, challenging rounds. Briar Bay Golf Course sprawls in all directions across 30 acres of lush greenery polka-dotted with trees and bunkers. Each year, this par 31 executive golf course serves as home for more than 40,000 rounds of golf and several hundred nighttime games of bio-sonar badminton. Greynolds Park similarly tests golfers with a par 36 course that stretches 3,100 yards from the longest tees. After matches at Greynolds, players can retire to a spacious clubhouse to tabulate scores and settle any draws with a round of rock-paper-scissors.
Each day, the cracks of bats connecting with fastballs and the smacks of baseballs arriving in leather mitts can be heard echoing throughout Hitters Hangout’s climate controlled indoor facility. The staff here encourages serious baseball and softball improvement within the facility’s three cages: a Major League cage for live batting practice, a Minor League cage outfitted with Iron Mike pitching machines, and a training tunnel for pitching, catching, and witnessing where mascots are kept during off-hours. The professional staff of instructors—which includes Orlando Palmeiro of the 2002 World Series champion Anaheim Angels, former Marlins catcher Jorge Fabregas, and Yuniesky Betancourt of the Brewers—pass along their insights on hitting, pitching, catching, and fielding during private and group lessons.

Since 1984, swim gym has work towards one goal: to maximize pool safety by making people comfortable in the water. Since splashing onto the scene, the facility has schooled more than 45,000 students—most of whom happen to have feet instead of flippers. Coach and director Robert Strauss leads the facility's efforts, having taught in Miami himself since 1973. But these days, swim gym spreads its teachings across a trio of South Florida locations, where students of all ages can boost their floatability during group or private lessons and fitness classes, such as Waterobics and Aqua Zumba.
