After Richard and Deana Zaccardo realized their dream by buying Belmar Bakery in 2002, they continued to let their dream grow, expanding with a sit-down café and a Cake Land area dedicated to the design of their signature cakes. With such dedication to their craft, it's no wonder why the bakery was voted Best Baked Goods in Amarillo by the readers of Amarillo Globe-News for 10 years in a row. In the bakery, sweet aromas of pastries, cookies, and pies waft under customer noses followed by rich scents of brewing coffee from the café. Upon adding the café to their offerings, the Zaccardos expanded on their ambitions by including hot sandwiches, soups, and salads, and their Cake Land shows off their extravagantly decorated cake samples and a photographic history of how their cakes heroically toppled the tyranny of Candy Land. The cake area is also available for cake and cookie-decorating events for kids, as well as birthday parties.
Mama Krusty taught her 13 children to memorize her family's famous kolache recipes, just as her father taught her to do at his bakery in Czechoslovakia. Carrying on the tradition at Kolache Cafe & Baking Company, 1 of Krusty's 13 students fills bakers' racks with pastries made by following that long-remembered formula. Inside the café, red walls surround glossy wooden tabletops, and a long rectangular rug emblazoned with Kolache Cafe's logo leads up to the cash register and chalkboards bearing a written menu of kolaches. Each golden pastry is crowned with sweet or savory ingredients including sweet chocolate cream cheese, blueberry, and jalapeño cream cheese with bacon, and signature stuffed kolache pockets surround their cargo with a pastry shell, like a backpack carved out of a large flaky biscuit. Cake bites in flavors such as tiramisu and key lime wait to ride waves of Peet's coffee or fountain drinks into hungry mouths.
For more than 30 years, Great Harvest Bread Company has fashioned fresh, handmade loaves, muffins, and baked goods every day from scratch using whole wheat from family-owned farms. Gourmet meats, cheeses, and garnishes are sandwiched between honey whole wheat, Harvest white, or Squall, whose yeast only rises when placed in a windy thunderstorm. Green, yellow, and red bell peppers marinated in balsamic vinaigrette snuggle into the roast beef and peppers panini ($6.75) alongside melted provolone, chipotle-mayo sauce, lettuce, tomato, and onion. Pretzel professionals prepare a wide array of sweet-and-salty snacks, spiraling them into ornate knots with the delicacy of a grandmotherly sailor and baking them to golden brown in full view of customers.
After striping just-baked cake pops with frosting, bakers at Cake Pop Creations carefully wrap them with cold gel packs and plenty of padding before shipping them across the country. Whimsical and colorful, the miniature cakes have surged in popularity, and the mail-order bakery often whips up treats for customers including Disney, Ernst & Young, and the Easter bunny. While bakers offer an abundance of varieties, each individually decorated and tucked into a festive box or bouquet base, they can also customize treats according to customers' whimsies. The resulting packages are eco-friendly, containing only reusable, recyclable, or biodegradable materials, in line with Cake Pop Creations' goal to one day repair the ozone with a protective layer of ganache.
A lifelong baker, Tina turned her zeal for treats into a business when she opened Bluebonnet Cupcakery in fall of 2012. She is known for her original creation––the pie cupcake––but she also whips up batches of traditional cupcakes, sugar cookies, and cakes for special occasions. Her baked goods are a hit at events such as baby showers and birthday parties as well as meetings and company food fights. Always open to suggestions, she adorns her treats with custom decorations at no additional charge.
