From a single shop opened in 1978, Amazing Fantasy Books & Comics curates a selection of new monthlies, graphic novels, manga, games, and action figures in four hotspots. Colorful characters from mainstream and independent publishers fill the pages of new issues ($2.99+) and graphic-novel collections, such as The Amazing Spider-Man: Big Time ($10) or Kate Beaton's Hark! A Vagrant ($17.95). Text-based novels recount tales of pulp vigilantes such as the Green Hornet ($15.15) and Zorro ($13.55), and 14th Dalai Lama: A Manga Biography ($13.50) illustrates the spiritual leader’s life story with Japanese-style black-and-white art. Gamers can pick up a Don Quixote board game and join the valiant fight against alternative-energy sources depicted in Cervantes’s novel ($26.21).
Tens of thousands of used CDs, DVDs, and video games stock the shelves at Disc Replay. Since 1994, the store has bought and sold the secondhand wares to customers in search of new titles or rare finds, as well as used electronics such as gaming systems, iPods, and portable phonographs. The shop backs their stock by guaranteeing that every item will work like new—if it doesn't, customers can exchange their purchase without hassle.
The owners of Evolution Music have been a fixture in Chicago's music scene for years. They've operated several music venues, recorded albums for area bands, and organized concerts for more than 5,000 local and national acts. At their Orland Park studio, they help musicians of all experiences to develop their skills with guitar, bass, piano, and drum lessons. Visitors can also peruse instruments in an onsite shop or schedule an appointment in the onsite recording studio.
Frugal Muse is all about second chances. Within its 7,000 sq. ft. of retail space, a novel's protagonist can take another shot at defeating the villain, finding true love, or successfully opening a pickle jar. Here, shelf after shelf holds lightly-used and discounted books, vinyl records, movies, video games, and CDs. At one end of the store, a $1 bargain wall surrounds patrons with even more discounted reading materials, while two separate rooms brim with 10,000 items for kids.
As for the source of these second-hand materials, Frugal Muse relies on its customers, who can bring in gently used items for store credit (or cash in certain cases). And while second-hand items remain the focus, the store does stock some new reading materials. The staff can even special order most books in print for about 25% off their going price.
