When she isn’t taking time to work with her many youth-based organizations, owner Lakiesha Jernagin leads her team of licensed cosmetologists as they help enhance the natural beauty of customers with hairstyling services, nailcare, and facials. The salon is split into two floors, providing plenty of space and privacy for customers. On the first floor, conditioning services repair hair damaged from the sun’s rays or the moon’s disapproving gaze, while cuts and colors update looks to accentuate facial features. Damaged nails regain strength on the second floor, where pedicure chairs and manicure stations reside. Inside private treatment rooms, spa services such as facials and massages ward off tension.
Meander through the sunny rooms of Trenditions Salon, and you can catch a glimpse of stylist Rebecca snipping up a sleek pixie cut or Tara coloring hair in glimmering golden highlights. During football season, you might spot stylist Cheryl adorning locks with bold purple tinsel extensions in honor of the Baltimore Ravens. The trio of seasoned hairdressers bustle across the salon's handsome hardwood and cheerful checkered floors, performing an array of hair services for women, men, and children alike. They smooth frizz with advanced hair-glossing and Japanese straightening treatments, and arrange locks into elegant up-dos for formal events. The versatile beauticians also extend their expertise to facial waxing and transform faces with professional makeup application services—ideal for brides primping for their big days or competitors in very serious games of hide-and-go-seek.
When working with clients’ hands, the master nail technicians of Unforgettable Nails do everything by hand. Using anywhere from 18 to 21 years of professional experience, practitioners paint nail-art designs and resurface artificial nails—fiberglass, gel, or acrylics—by hand instead of using drills or tiny zambonis. The entire staff is licensed to perform CND Shellac manicures, which can be upgraded with treatments such as paraffin dips and skin-soothing hand “facials.” Beyond a row of whirlpool-spa pedicure chairs is a massage room, where licensed therapists assuage muscles with Swedish, deep-tissue, and hot-stone techniques.
This Aveda salon is supervised by Dawn Caldwell and Kristy Heron, who have more than three decades of salon- and spa-industry experience between them. Dawn specializes in hair color, much like a chameleon perched on a Sasquatch's shoulder, and Kristy is a massage therapist, who also wields a master’s in acupuncture to free up disruptive energy blockages. The duo teams up with a staff of aestheticians, nail technicians, and stylists to treat guests to facials, acupuncture, massages, and salon treatments.
For 30 years, strand snipper Will Colhouer has expertly fashioned coifs and fostered friendships with clients at his comfortable and casual neighborhood barbershop. Customers sink into a retro crimson and silver barber chair, and Will expunges split ends and transforms hirsute head shrubs into polished styles or permanent top hats. During the father-son package, men and their carbon copies can indulge in cowlick-to-chin transformations. After Will crops hair, grown-up scruff falls away under the straight razor of a traditional hot-towel shave, and fuzz-free faces peek into their adult future with a mock shave.
The warm glow of wall sconces and crystal chandeliers bathes the earth-hued salon in elegant light, illuminating the team of certified stylists and colorists as they reinvent hairstyles from behind plush styling chairs. They draw from professional name-brand products, such as L’Oréal Professionnel and Moroccanoil, as they perform cuts, colors, and smoothing treatments. Nail techs, meanwhile, lavish digits in decorative polishes as aestheticians shoot for epidermal excellence with facials, makeup applications, and waxing services. Staffers also offer in-house and onsite bridal services, prepping brides-to-be and their life-size cake toppers for the big day.
Maria Butta built Tranquille Hair & Body on a foundation of experience strengthened by two decades in the hair industry and the training she continues to pursue at beauty havens such as the Color Academy in New York. Butta filled her aesthetic oasis with a staff of talented stylists, nail technicians, and skincare experts, and all this hard work has paid off. In 2009, Tranquille took home eight Best of Citysearch awards in categories such as Deep-Tissue Massage, Nail Salon, and Hair Removal, and in 2011 it was listed on CBS Baltimore's compilation of the Best Makeovers in Baltimore.
According to Towson Patch, Butta recently doubled the shop's size to 2,200 square feet. Now, in addition to offering salon and spa services, she teams up with Dr. Brent Birely and Dr. Richard Adler, who provide cosmetic injectables, and a medical aesthetician who performs exfoliating chemical peels. Butta has also hired a licensed acupuncturist to treat conditions such as a compromised immune system or to sate people’s curiosity about what they’d look like if they were half porcupine.
