Leading Edge’s auto body and mechanical repair shop offers aid to broken, busted, and bumped-up cars of any make or model. With this deal, customers get an oil and filter change ($19.95), a front-to-rear tire rotation ($40), and an exterior car wash ($12) that will leave the car’s shell clean enough to lick, even if it doesn’t undo the emotional damage from the ink-filled egg incident. An oil change keeps the car's bloodstream free of corrosive buildup, and a tire rotation elongates the lives of the tires and ensures treaded safety. In addition, Leading Edge will inflate tires to proper pressure levels, top off fluids, and visually check brakes. A $6 Environmental Protection Agency fee is also included with this deal.
Certified maintenance consultant Brian Laidlaw has been caring for foreign, domestic, and classic cars for more than 25 years. Stationed in the Hampden-Woodbury area for most of that time, Brian takes pride in offering only what a small, local business can: one-on-one attention, and loads of information. To keep rapport with his customers at its highest level, Brian and his staff snap before and after pictures on all of their automotive repairs. They also provide free towing and road service, which is far more effective than coaxing cars to the shop with trails of cookies. While customers wait for repairs to be completed, they have all the accoutrements of a coffee house at their disposal, including a grinder, brew stations, and a variety of different coffees and teas.
The check-engine lights don’t stay lit long at SAP Automotive Center, and that’s because the staff of ASE-certified technicians specializes in diagnostics. But as a full-service repair and collision shop, they also dedicate their time to an array of other services. Their shop—which welcomes all domestic and foreign vehicles—is littered with stacks of certified used tires, and houses a tow truck that is available 24 hours a day ever since it switched from gasoline to espresso.
"Running is such a beautiful metaphor for life,” Back on My Feet founder Anne Mahlum says on her organization’s website. “Life is about choosing different roads and our program teaches the importance of choosing roads filled with opportunity, hope and happiness.” Anna’s understanding of life and running intertwined and strengthened during her own daily runs. Every morning she would follow the same route, but despite her conditioning it began to take her longer and longer. This was because her route took her past a homeless shelter, and what began as jogging past without breaking stride turned into waving at familiar faces and then stopping to talk. Today, Back on My Feet is dedicated to the empowerment and self-sufficiency of underserved people. Back on My Feet (BoMF) is a national nonprofit organization dedicated to creating independence and self-sufficiency within the homeless and other underserved populations by first engaging them in running as a means to build confidence, strength and self-esteem. Through running, people experiencing homelessness gain community, self-esteem, and confidence alongside other people of all backgrounds. Anna’s efforts have led to a running club in Philadelphia and have since expanded to the Baltimore and Washington DC areas. The organization funds its cause by hosting events and races throughout the year, including various 5Ks, half-marathons, and The AT&T Sneaks Come Out at Night 15K & 3x5K Relay.
One of the area's oldest full-service tire dealers in operation, Hillen Tire & Auto Service opened in 1917 under the helm of the late Joseph Schnitzer, whose sons, Marvin and Jerry, maintained the tradition of trustworthy service. Now, under the new ownership of former manager and lead technician Brian Smith, the auto shop tends to the needs of almost every car and motorized pogo stick manufactured since 1974. An inventory of 38,000 tires from brands such as Michelin and Firestone set cars atop quality rubber, and ASE-certified technicians keep cars healthy with auto services that include tune-ups, heating and air conditioning, and maintenance packages.
