SILO'S fills melodic voids with performances by local and nationally recognized artists and coats throats with bottled bliss from a number of Carneros and Napa Valley wineries. Friday and Saturday nights, live jazz, blues, rock, reggae, and Motown acts inspire involuntary gyrations on the dance floor with a cover charge ($10–$20 per show) to prevent exuberant octopi from clogging dancing lanes. Upcoming acts include the British Invasion tribute act The Who Too on Saturday, April 16, and the classic-rock cover experts of Renegade on Saturday, April 30, playing the songs of Journey, REO Speedwagon, and other '70s and '80s acts.

In 1941, Wilma and Henry Dorsey opened a modest family eatery on the corner of 18th and Market in West Oakland. Over the next four decades, devoted family members transformed the place with a relocation, the addition of a cocktail lounge, and the construction of a beautiful wooden bar. Today, Dorsey family members remain the sole shareholders of a bustling restaurant that celebrates their Texas roots with country-style meals of fried chicken, catfish, gumbo, barbecue ribs, and sweet peach cobbler. A rotating weekly menu makes fresh additions to the slate of hearty, homecooked food with such dishes as chitterlings and smothered steak, while sides of collard greens, yams, and black-eyed peas garnish every dish with Southern panache.

Far more than a mere restaurant, Dorsey's Locker also treats guests to a full bar and lineup of live entertainment. On Sunday nights from 6 p.m until 10 p.m., the restaurant waives a cover charge for live R&B and jazz music. Open mic events each Tuesday show off the hidden talents of friends and neighbors, while Monday, Thursday, and Saturday-night karaoke provides a socially acceptable outlet for singing a love song to a plate of breaded pork chops.

Renowned Cuban trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, who has received four Grammy awards and six Billboard awards, lacquers his audience's eardrums with genre-hopping performances that range from classical to bebob. After mastering the classical style during the beginning stages of his career, Sandoval repurposed his horn for jazz, using the valves to create improvisational glissandos and adding a Mustang-V8 engine to the bell. Revel in the expansive soundscape as he exemplifies these jazz chops and peforms an eclectic range of other tunes, including Afro-Cuban creations inspired by his homeland and some of Mozart's concertos. Unsatisfied with relying upon just a single instrument, the artist will also tickle the piano keys and flugel-horn valves, which yield much nicer sounds than tickling a bobcat.

During a matinee performance in a historic concert hall, internationally acclaimed classical guitarist Francesco Buzzurro joins jazz guitarist Richard Smith to showcase the vast array of styles and sounds housed in the hollow of their instruments, plucking through Italian tarantellas, dramatic tango and flamenco numbers, and jazz pieces. The concert celebrates the duo's upcoming CD, Un Mondo, Due Chitarre, or One World, Two Guitars, which a JazzTimes article anticipates as a union of distinctive talents whose mutual love for the guitar and onstage rounds of patty-cake shines through in a diverse set of songs. On the album, the duo majestically soars through classical melodies as well as covers of rock tunes such as Stevie Wonder's Isn't She Lovely? and The Who's Pinball Wizard. Hosting the event, the Pacific Italian Alliance celebrates Italian culture, fosters society among local Italian-Americans, and secretly plans to build a bridge connecting Italy to the United States.
